Hampden-sydney vs. Gettysburg

The Game Story:
HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA (March 19, 2005) – Hampden-Sydney sophomore midfielder Thomas Jennings (Murfreesboro, TN/Webb School) scored four goals in the Tiger’s 11-7 victory over sixth ranked Gettysburg College. Hampden-Sydney improves its record to 3-2 while Gettysburg slips to 2-2.

Gettysburg jumped out to an early lead as junior attack Brian Pryor (Dallas, TX/St. Marks) found the net just 1:06 into the game. Gettysburg continued their offensive attack with goals from Chase Stewart (Downington, PA/Downington) and Chris Renzi (Fairport, NY/Fairport) to give the Bullets a 3-0 lead.

Hampden-Sydney stormed back with back to back goals by Thomas Jennings to close out the first period. The Tigers struck again at the 10:30 mark in the second period as Colin Dunn (Chevy Chase, MD/St. Johns College HS) set up sophomore Michael Via (Virginia Beach, VA/Norfolk Academy) for the goal, evening the score at three a-piece.

Gettysburg’s Matt Smith responded with a goal for the Bullets just 28 seconds later. With time ticking down in the first half Hampden-Sydney got three consecutive goals from Eamon Thornton (Atlanta, GA/McCallie School), Sean McChesney (Charlottesville, VA/St. Anne’s-Belfield), and Thomas Jennings to give the Tigers a 6-4 advantage at the break.

Early in the third, Chase Stewart struck again for the Bullets to bring Gettysburg within one, but the Hampden-Sydney offense proved to be unstoppable as Sean McChesney scored his second goal of the game followed by a William Shell (Alexandria, VA/St. Stephen’s) goal assisted by McChesney to put the Tigers up 8-5.

Chase Stewart scored his third goal of the game for Gettysburg with 3:56 left in the third period cutting the lead to 8-6 but with 40 seconds remaining, junior Vince Smith found the net to give the Tigers a solid 9-6 advantage heading into the final 15 minutes.

Thomas Jennings pushed the lead to four with his fourth goal of the game with 12:26 left to play. The number six team in the nation Gettysburg would not go away as sophomore midfielder Jared Harriman (Yarmouth, ME/Yarmouth) gave the Bullets a glimpse of hope scoring with 9:08 remaining in the fourth, but the Tigers leading goal scorer Eamon Thornton put the nail in the coffin with his second goal of the game and 13th goal of the season at the 4:33 mark. Hampden-Sydney controlled the clock for the remainder of the game for a final 11-7 victory over Gettysburg College.

Overall, Hampden-Sydney out shot Gettysburg 31-24 and chalked up 47 ground balls compared to the Bullets 41. Gettysburg held a slight advantage on face-offs winning 12-22. Senior goalkeeper Jeremy Bull (Raleigh, NC/Ravenscroft) recorded eight saves in a winning effort while Gettysburg goalie Pat Vaughan (Cockeysville, MD/Loyola Blakefield) had 10.

Hampden-Sydney travels to Salem, VA on Saturday, March 26 to take on 10th ranked Roanoke starting at 1:00 pm.
