Hampden-sydney vs. Mary Washington

The Game Story:
(February 26, 2005) HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA – Hampden-Sydney College, ranked 14th in the nation, kicked off the 2005 season with a dominating win over the University of Mary Washington, 14-3. The Tigers start off 1-0 while Mary Washington drops to 0-2 on the season.

Hampden-Sydney bolted out to a 5-0 lead before Mary Washington knew what hit them. Vince Smith, (Palmyra, VA/St. Anne’s-Belfield) who led the Tigers in scoring last season, scored the first goal of 2005 for Hampden-Sydney 43 ticks into the game. Then 28 seconds later, senior attack Sean McChesney (Charlottesville, VA/St. Anne’s-Belfield) connected off a pass from Middleton Smith (Stevenson, MD/Boys Latin) for a quick 2-0 start. Thomas Jennings (Murfreesboro, TN/Webb School) followed with his first goal of the season off a pass from teammate Vince Smith. Again scoring for the Tigers, sophomore attack William Shell (Alexandria, VA/St. Stephen’s) exploded in the next two minutes scoring back to back goals to give the Tigers a 5-0 lead with just over five minutes gone by in the first quarter.

Mary Washington senior Lee Thompson finally answered for the eagles with a goal assisted by Dave Justin at the eight minute mark.

Thomas Jennings struck for the second time giving the Tigers a 6-1 advantage at the end of the first period.

Hampden-Sydney’s defense smothered the Eagles holding them scoreless through nearly two whole periods while the Tigers continued to build their commanding lead. At the end of the third period Hampden-Sydney led 12-2 thanks to three goals by Eamon Thornton (Atlanta, GA/McCallie School) along with Sean McChesney’s second goal and three more assists. McChesney totaled six points on the day with two goals and four assists.

Michael Via (Virginia Beach, VA/Norfolk Academy) took over in the final period scoring the Tiger’s final two goals. Mary Washington junior Dave Morris (Charlottesville, VA/Albemarle) stopped the bleeding with a goal for the Eagles at 7:13 assisted by Dan Punaro (McLean, VA/The Heights).

Hampden-Sydney out shot Mary Washington 33-16 en route to a final score of 14-3. Eamon Thornton and Michael Via led the way with three goals apiece followed by Sean McChesney, Thomas Jennings, Vince Smith, and William Shell who each had two.

The Tigers have three road games throughout spring break starting at St. Mary’s on March 5th, Haverford on the 9th, and Washington on the 12th before returning home to host Gettysburg on March 19th at 1:00 pm.
