FOURTH-RANKED LAX TIGERS TAKE DOWN MARY WASHINGTON, 12-5 HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA (March 19, 2003)—Senior midfielder Chris Lucas (Fairfax Station, VA/Paul VI) scored four first-half goals, while senior Jason Rostan (Farmville, VA/Prince Edward) registered four assists as the fourth-ranked Hampden-Sydney lacrosse team downed Mary Washington, 12-5, Wednesday afternoon. With the win, the Tigers improve to 5-0 as MWC falls to 2-3. The game was knotted a two goals each midway through the first half before the Tiger offensive attack took over, scoring six unanswered to hold an 8-2 lead at the half. Lucas led the way with his four first-half strikes, while Phil Dick (Salem, VA/Salem) helped the cause with a goal and assist of his own. The two teams played even lacrosse in the third quarter as each scored twice. Chris Schaaf (Midlothian, VA/St. Christopher’s) scored two goals for the Tigers in the quarter, while Chris Doddridge scored two of his four goals in the period. Matt Fassnacht (Fairfax, VA/Robinson) and Kevin Burke (Fairfax, VA/Robinson) each got in on the scoring act in the fourth quarter to put the clamps on the contest as the Tigers prevailed, 12-5. Lucas finished the contest with four goals and one assist, while Rostan finished with four assists. Dick finished with a goal and two assists, while Schaaf had the two goals for the Tigers, who out-shot MWC, 27-22. Jeremy Bull (Raleigh, NC/Ravenscroft) and Peter Ellington (Lexington, VA/Rockbridge) combined for the win in the net for the Tigers. Doddridge led the way with four goals for the Eagles, while Mark Malone also added a scoring strike. Mike D’Eredita finished with six saves in the net for Mary Washington. Hampden-Sydney returns to action Saturday as the Tigers host third-ranked Whitter (CA) at 1 pm at Fulton Field in a battle of unbeaten top-five ranked teams. |
