April 9, 2005
The Game Story:
HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA – Hampden-Sydney midfielders Thomas Jennings (Murfreesboro, TN/Webb School) and Ryan Harrington (Dallas, TX/Plano) scored three goals apiece to help lead the Tigers past Randolph-Macon,10-5, in a crucial Old Dominion Athletic Conference game. With the win, Hampden-Sydney improves to 7-3 overall and 3-1 in the ODAC while R-MC slips to 6-5 for the year and 1-2 in the conference.

Sean McChesney’s (Charlottesville, VA/St. Anne’s-Belfield) first of his three assists came just two and half minutes into the game as he set up Thomas Jennings for the Tigers first goal of the game. Randolph-Macon countered with two straight goals from Peter LaPaglia (Baltimore, MD/Boys’ Latin) and Paul Johnson (Laurel, MD/Glenelg) to give the Yellow Jackets a 2-1 advantage after the first period.

Harrington tied the game at two early in the second quarter for H-SC but Randolph-Macon’s Paul Johnson struck back just 11 seconds later with his second goal of the game. Trailing by one, Hampden-Sydney sophomore midfielder Jarrot Patteson (Sewickley, PA/Quaker Valley) scored his first goal of the season to tie the game at three. Harrington found the back of the net again off a pass from teammate Dalton Grein (High Point, NC/McCallie School) to give Hampden-Sydney a 4-3 lead heading into the half.

Coming out of the locker room in the third quarter, Hampden-Sydney had an offensive explosion with six goals and built a 10-3 lead while holding the Yellow Jackets scoreless. Hampden-Sydney’s three starting senior defensemen, Will Albright (Alexandria, VA/St. Stephen’s), John Pritzlaff (Castlerock, CO/Kent Denver), and Ryan Burns (Fairfax, VA/Robinson) locked down the backfield. Not only did they hold the Yellow Jackets scoreless, but they limited them to just three shots in the entire period.

With time winding down in the fourth, Randolph-Macon made one last run as P.C. Johnson (Laurel, MD/Hammond) scored two goals, but that would be as close as they come for a final score of 10-5.

Hampden-Sydney and Randolph-Macon both came away with 30 ground balls apiece while R-MC out shot the Tigers 30-27. Tiger face off specialist Ryan Fassnacht (Fairfax, VA/Robinson) won 12-18 face offs for Hampden-Sydney and claimed six of the Tiger’s ground balls.

In front of the net, Hampden-Sydney senior goalie Jeremy Bull (Raleigh, NC/Ravenscroft) racked up 15 saves while R-MC goalkeeper Brian Vierheller (Forest Hill, MD/John Carroll) had eight of his own.

Hampden-Sydney travels to Lynchburg next Saturday, April 16, to take on the Hornets in an important Old Dominion Athletic Conference Game starting at 2pm.
