The Game Story:
HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA (April 28, 2007)� Hampden-Sydney�s lacrosse team honored their eight seniors with a 12-7 victory over Randolph-Macon College on Saturday at Hellmuth-Pritzlaff Field. The Tigers held a 7-3 advantage at halftime and went on for the victory despite a late comeback attempt by the Yellow Jackets. Senior William Shell (Alexandria, VA/St. Stephen�s) scored three goals and recorded one assist to help lead the Tigers. With the win, Hampden-Sydney improves to 12-2 overall and 5-1 in the conference, while Randolph-Macon falls to 6-9 on the season and 1-5 in the ODAC. The Tigers assure at least a share of the regular-season top spot and will host Lynchburg College in the opening round of the ODAC Tournament on Tuesday, May 1, at 4:00 pm.

Randolph-Macon jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, but freshman Thomas Hovis (Richmond, VA/St. Christopher�s) got the Tigers on the board with a goal at the 8:54 mark off an assist from Shell. Hampden-Sydney would add three more goals in the first quarter, building a 4-2 lead after the first frame. In the second quarter, the Yellow Jackets opened with a goal to cut the lead to one, 4-3, but the Tigers responded with three unanswered goals, taking a 7-3 lead into the intermission.

The Tigers picked up where they had left off in the third quarter, scoring four goals while holding the Yellow Jackets scoreless for the entire 15 minutes. Scoring the for the Tigers in the third was Shell with two goals, while Thomas Jennings (Murfreesboro, TN/Webb School) and Joe Daugherty (Charlottesville, VA/St. Anne�s-Belfield) added one goal apiece. Trailing by a score of 11-3, the Yellow Jackets fought hard to get back into the game. Randolph-Macon would add four goals in the final frame but it would prove to not be enough as Hampden-Sydney scored one goal and went on for the 12-7 victory.

Leading the Tigers in scoring were Shell and Kelly Mattie (Charlottesville, VA/St. Anne�s-Belfield) with three goals and one assist each, while senior Ryan Harrington (Dallas, TX/Plano) recorded two goals and one assist on the day. Joe Daugherty finished the day with two goals and two assists.

Senior goalkeeper Scott Russell (Darien, CT/Darien) earned his 12th win of the season as he recorded five saves and grabbed four groundballs in the winning effort. Senior Middleton Smith (Stevenson, MD/Boys� Latin) was 11-of-16 on face-off attempts with four groundballs.
Hampden-Sydney will return to action on Tuesday, May 1, at 4:00 pm as the Tigers will host Lynchburg College in opening round of the 2007 Old Dominion Athletic Conference Lacrosse Tournament. The game will take place at the new Hellmuth-Pritzlaff Field.
