|The Game Story:|
|HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA – On senior night at Hampden-Sydney, the 15th ranked Hampden-Sydney lacrosse team defeated No. 10 Washington and Lee, 10-5, at Fulton Field in the last regular season game of the 2005 season. After the Hampden-Sydney victory, the Tigers and the Generals both finish regular season play with a record of 8-4 overall and 4-2 in the ODAC.|
Hampden-Sydney’s Michael Via (Virginia Beach, VA/Norfolk Academy) set the pace for the Tigers early in the game as he found the net at 9:32 to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead but Washington & Lee senior Mike Baracco answered with a goal of his own at 7:54. With just under two minutes to go, senior captain Sean McChesney (Charlottesville, VA/St Anne’s-Belfield) put H-SC up 2-1 to close out the first period.
The Generals knotted up the game at 2 as Jim Ryan (Virginia Beach, VA/Norfolk Academy) scored at 14:29. Hampden-Sydney sophomore Ryan Harrington (Dallas, Tx/Plano) netted back to back goals shortly after to push the Tiger lead to 4-2. With six and half minutes left in the second quarter the officials stopped the game due to thunder and lightning. After 45 minutes of rain and hail the teams took the field again. Junior Vince Smith (Palmyra, VA/St. Anne’s-Belfield) came out of the locker room fired up and took over the game with two consecutive goals to give the Tigers a 6-2 lead heading into the half.
Hampden-Sydney continued to pour it on in the third as Michael Via scored his second goal of the game. Via finished the game with two assists to go along with his two goals. W&L senior Jack Murray (Earlysville, VA/Albemarle) stopped the bleeding with a goal for the Generals to bring the score to 7-3 but Hampden-Sydney answered with three more of their own. Washington & Lee scored the final two goals of the game but the Tiger’s damage had been done to give Hampden-Sydney a 10-5 victory.
Hampden-Sydney out shot the Generals 34-24 and held a 33-25 advantage in ground balls while both teams came away with 9-18 face off victories.
In the goal, Hampden-Sydney senior Jeremy Bull returned to the starting lineup after sitting out the previous game due to injury. Bull recorded 6 saves while W&L goalie, Chris Lalli, had eight of his own.
The Tigers return to action on Tuesday, April 26 in the first round of the ODAC Tournament.
