| The Game Story: | |||||
| The visiting Hartwick Hawks got three goals from junior Noah Hollander
(Guilford, CT/Guilford) and 12 saves from senior goalie Mark Colite
(Southington, CT/Southington) in downing Oneonta State 10-7 in the
semifinals of the ECAC Div. III Upstate New York Tournament this afternoon
at All College Field. The win for Hartwick (8-7) moves them into the
championship game tomorrow against top-seeded RIT while the loss for Oneonta
(9-8) ends its season.
The game certainly played as advertised with a very deliberate, defensive style displayed by both teams. The first quarter ended in a 1-1 tie even though there were a total of 23 shots taken by both teams. The Hawks broke the scoreless tie at 12:59 when junior Brian Prescott (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury) took a pass from classmate Devin Poole (Geneva, NY/Geneva) and beat Oneonta goalie Mike Louer (Islip, NY/Islip) for the early lead. The tying goal for the Red Dragons came at the 5:40 mark on a goal by senior Dan Bakke (Floral Park, NY/Floral Park) off of a feed from classmate Dave Coughlin (Latham, NY/Shaker). The game loosened up in the second quarter with the two teams combining for seven goals. The Hawks got the better of the Red Dragons and took a 6-3 lead into halftime. The two teams exchanged goals during the first four minutes of the quarter before Hartwick scored two straight to take a 4-2 lead. Oneonta cut the lead back to 4-3, but Hartwick answered with back-to-back goals in the last 1:33 for its three-goal lead at the break. The game continued with plenty of action in the third quarter, as Oneonta senior James Battaglia (Saratoga, NY/Saratoga Springs) tallied an extra-man goal at 11:35 to cut Hartwick's lead to 6-4. A goal by freshman Josh Porcell (Gansevoort, NY/Bridgeton Academy) followed by Hollander's second goal of the game gave the Hawks a four-goal lead at 8-4 midway through the quarter. The two teams each scored one more goal in the quarter, as Hartwick entered the final period with a 9-5 advantage. Oneonta senior Keith Adler (Seaford, NY/Seaford) scored the first goal of the fourth quarter at 12:39 to make the score 9-6. Neither team scored until senior Arie Claflin (Syracuse, NY/Corcoran) scored an unassisted goal to bring Oneonta to within two goals at 9-7 with 3:47 remaining. The Hawks put the final nail in the coffin just 40 seconds later on Hollander's final goal of the game against an empty net. |
