#5 RIT Stops Hawks, 14-5

ONEONTA, NY – Nationally fifth ranked RIT handed Hartwick a 14-5 loss on Saturday at Wright Stadium in the Empire 8 Conference opener for both clubs. The Tigers improve to 5-0 on the season. The Hawks slip to 5-3.
The Tigers scored the game’s first three goals in the first quarter. Iric Bressler, who finished the day with a game-high six points, scored 49 seconds into the game to give his squad the lead. After neither team mustered a goal over the next 11 minutes, Bressler gave the Tigers a two-goal edge with exactly three minutes left on the clock. One minute, 23 seconds later, Tyler Russell tallied for the first of his team-best three goals and the visitors led 3-0 after one period.
Russell made the score 4-0 just 17 ticks into the second quarter. Dave Aitchison (Farmingdale, NY/Farmingdale) answered for the Hawks with the team’s first goal at the 13:28 mark and he set up Joe Shields (Loudonville, NY/Shaker) on the man-advantage to cut the deficit to two, 4-2.
The Tigers wasted little time building the lead back up to three as Kelso Davis tallied 1:06 after Shields’ goal. Later in the period, Russell and Jordan MacIntosh tallied 44 seconds apart to give RIT a five goal-edge, 7-2. Harry Hughes (Holtsville, NY/Sachem East) got one back for the Hawks 1:27 before halftime for his first of three tallies on the day, and the Hawks trailed 7-3 at the break.
Fourteen seconds into the third quarter, Chris Cherami added to the RIT advantage and MacIntosh added RIT’s ninth goal 2:22 later.
In the fourth quarter, two more tallies in the opening 3:21 extended the Tiger advantage before Hughes scored from Aitchison with 9:55 left. The Tigers tacked on another two tallies over the next five minutes and Hughes capped his hat-trick with 1:49 left. Matt Lesczynski closed out the scoring with eight seconds to play.
RIT held a 42-28 edge in shots in the game. They also had advantages in ground balls (43-27) and face-offs (14-of-22).
Hughes’s three goals marks the sixth time in eight games he has registered three tallies or more. Alex Skvarch (Syracuse, NY/Marcellus) picked up a team-best five ground balls for ’Wick. He also caused two turnovers. Jesse Grimm (Farmingville, NY/Sachem East) added four GB’s and Tim Antos (Marcellus, NY/Onondaga) forced a game-high four turnovers. Goalkeeper Carl Lengel (Lynbrook, NY/Lynbrook) made 13 saves in the Hartwick cage.
Russell ended the day with three goals for RIT. Bressler, Cherami, and MacIntosh each scored two. MJ Kiekebelt won 11-of-15 draws and ended the game with a game-high eight ground balls. Robert Tonnessen made four stops for RIT over the first 57 minutes. Anthony Deleo made two saves in the final three minutes.
