Hartwick vs. Scranton

The Game Story:
ONEONTA, NY - Hartwick scored five unanswered goals to start the game and never looked back in a 9-6 victory over Scranton on Saturday at Wright Stadium. The Royals, who totaled 27 goals in wins over Ithaca and Utica this season, were shut out by the Hawk defense for the first 27 minutes of the game and managed just six tallies in the contest. Hartwick improves to 2-1 with the win. Scranton sinks to 2-2.

Freshmen Joe Shields (Loudonville, NY/Shaker), Harry Hughes (Holtsville, NY/Sachem East), and Bobby Cassidy (Oceanside, NY/Oceanside) led the way for Hartwick with a combined seven goals. Shields scored three times including both of Hartwick's fourth-quarter tallies. Hughes contributed two goals and an assist and Cassidy netted a pair of scores. Sophomore Tom Srubinski (West Islip, NY/West Islip) notched a goal and an assist, Dave Aitchison (N. Massapequa, NY/Farmingdale) dished out two assists, and Matt Landry (Duxbury, MA/Duxbury) added a goal.

Hartwick opened the scoring at the 4:11 mark of the first quarter as Hughes set up Landry for a 1-0 lead. Just 27 seconds later, Hughes scored his first of the day from Srubinski to extend the advantage. The game remained 2-0 for close to eight minutes until Cassidy scored unassisted and Hughes made it 4-0 with 26 seconds left in the period. Shields made it a five-goal game five minutes into the second stanza.

Scranton finally got on the scoreboard with 2:52 left in the half. Cassidy, however, rebuilt the five-goal edge with his second of the day 31 seconds before halftime. Both teams scored once in the third quarter with Srubinski netting Hartwick's goal and Robert Pantages talling for the Royals.

Early in the fourth, Shields made the score 8-2 but Scranton would mount a big comeback to get back into the game. Mike Rufo scored 37 seconds after Shields' marker which triggered a 4-0 Royal run over the next 3:39 to cut the deficit to two, 8-6. Sean Coleman scored twice and Rufo added a second tally in the run.

The Royals had several chances to draw within a goal. They took five shots at the Hartwick cage over the next two minutes but none were on target. The Hawks also had chances to extend their advantage as Shields hit the post twice in the final four minutes. After a Scranton penalty, Shields completed his hat-trick with a man-up goal from Aitchison to close out the day's scoring and seal the victory.

The Hawks outshot the Royals 47-32 in the game with Scranton earning a slight edge in ground balls 40-38. 'Wick goalie Ryan Twardowski (Emmaus, PA/S. Lehigh) turned away 10 Royal shots for the game. Senior Kevin Miller (Wantagh, NY/Wantagh) grabbed a team-best eight ground balls and caused a game-high five turnovers. Alex Skvarch (Syracuse, NY/Marcellus) nabbed five ground balls and Aitchison caused three turnovers for the Hawks.

Ryan Cefalu won 14-of-18 face-offs for Scranton and added four GBs. Sean Milde registered a game-high 10 ground balls and Andrew Eastwood contributed five.
