Haverford vs. Roanoke
March 8, 2006
The Game Story:
TOWSON, MD—Trailing 12-10 with 10:08 left in regulation, the 10th
ranked Roanoke College men’s lacrosse team scored the final five goals
of the game to pull out a 15-12 win over Haverford College on Wednesday in
Towson, MD. The Maroons improve to 2-2 with the win, snapping a two-game
losing streak, while the Fords fall to 1-2 overall.

Leading 11-10 heading into the fourth quarter, the Fords got a goal from
Matt Thorne-Fitgerald with 10:08 left to make the score 12-10. Less than 40
seconds later, the Maroons pulled to within one on a Jon Mason score. Mason
took a pass on the crease from Chris Keating and was able to beat the HC
keeper low. About three minutes later the same tandem evened the score at
12.

After the Maroons won the ensuing face-off, freshman Chaz Carlson got a
fastbreak going for RC, feeding Keating who ripped a 15-yard shot to give
the Maroons the 13-12 lead. Keating would score again, on a Nick Derby
fastbreak assist, and Mason scored the sixth of his goals to cap the Maroon
5-0 run.

As hot as they finished, the Maroons started just as quickly, streaking out
to a 4-0 lead in the first 4:53 of the game, getting one of those on a
fastbreak from senior defender Josh Bryant. Haverford scored the final two
goals of the period, the second a man-advantage strike from senior Ben
Reed.

With the first two goals of the second period, one from Shane Hafer and one
from Max Tcheyan, both one-on-one goals, Haverford drew even at four with
Roanoke. Those two goals would be the first two of six Haverford beat the
Maroons for in the second period of play. The fifth of those goals came
from Joe Mauri on a fastbreak feed from Neil Gordon. That goal gave HC its
first lead of the game, 7-6. Adam Leahy and Jon Mason countered for the
Maroons, but the game went into the break tied at eight after Dean
Granoff scored on a low bounce shot with just 29 seconds left in the half.

The Maroons again started strong, this time top open the second half,
scoring two goals in the first 1:30, goals from Mason an Zack Thomas. The
Fords, however, scored the next three goals, one each from Fitzgerald,
Granoff, and Mike Distler.

The Maroons of Roanoke College return to action on Saturday in a home game
against the Bears of Ursinus College. The game in Salem, VA begins at
1:00pm.
