Ithaca vs. Nazareth

The Game Story:
ITHACA, N.Y. (April 29, 2005) Fourth-seeded Nazareth jumped out to a 6-0 halftime left enroute to a 14-4 victory over top-seeded Ithaca in the opening round of the Empire 8 Men's Lacrosse Tournament. Nazareth advances to the Empire 8 Championship game on Sunday, traveling to #2 Hartwick at noon. The win avenged a disappointing 15-14 double overtime loss to Ithaca at home just a week ago.

The Golden Flyers dominated from the start, oushooting the host Bombers 46-26 for the game and winning 14 of 22 faceoffs. Following an early point-blank save by Alex Civalier (7 saves) to keep the score at 0-0, senior Ryan Feltner and freshman Aaron Civalier scored unassisted goals to give Nazareth a 2-0 advantage after the first quarter. Nazareth quickly extended that lead in the second quarter with goals by freshman Matt Aloi and an extra-man goal by Ryan Hotaling (pictured) to make the score 4-0. Bryan Coon scored off an assist from Hotaling and Greg Kanellis scored off an assist from Jordan Hirsch with just 17 seconds remaining in the first half to make the score 6-0.

The Golden Flyers scored the first goal of the third quarter before Ithaca finally got on the board. Nazareth extended a 9-3 third quarter lead to 14-3, scoring the first five goals of the fourth quarter, including two of Hotaling's four second-half goals.

Hotaling led all scores with five goals and two assists. Chad Amidon added two goals and Bryan Adams, Kanellis, and Hirsch each recorded a goal and an assist.

With the victory, Nazareth improves to 11-2 on the season. Hartwick defeated #3 RIT 9-8 on Friday to advance to Sunday's Championship game. This will be the two team's second meeting this season, with Nazareth having earned a 11-7 victory over the Hawks, in Oneonta, on April 7. The winner of the game earns an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Men's Lacrosse Tournament. The game will be broadcasted in Rochester on WHTK-AM 1280.
