| ITHACA, N.Y. -- The 13th-ranked men's lacrosse team opened conference play with an 11-3 win over St. John Fisher Wednesday afternoon. With the win, Ithaca extended its Empire 8 record to 17 straight regular season conference victories. Goalie Dennis Butler (Pleasantville/Pleasantville) recorded 13 saves in the win and now has 663 career saves, setting a school record. Pete Reardon previously held the record with 661 saves from 1983-86. Junior Craig Lepiane (West Irondequoit/Monroe) led the Bombers with five goals and one assist, while classmate Matt Nelligan (Pingree School/Rowley, Mass.) scored two goals. Junior Kevin Bush (Arapahoe [Colo.]/East Point, Fla.) tallied one goal and three assists for a four-point game and sophomore Tim Pfeffer (Penfield/Penfield) added a goal and an assist. Ithaca led 2-0 after the first quarter on goals from Nelligan and Lepiane and put the game out of reach with five second quarter goals. Lepiane netted what proved to be the game-winner 1:25 into the second frame with an assist from Bush. Lepiane had a hand in each of the Bombers final four goals, scoring three in a row before assisting on Pfeffer's tally to cap the scoring with 1:31 remaining in the contest. The Cardinals (2-2) were held scoreless until the 8:08 mark of the third quarter when senior Matt Kaiser (Waterloo/ Waterloo) to make is a 7-1 contest. Senior Matt Hargather (Fairport/Fairport) and freshman Michael-Paul Solamon (West Genesee/Camillus) added one goal each for St. John Fisher. The Bombers return to action on Friday at 4 p.m. against #11 Geneseo. The game will be played at Cornell’s Schoellkopf Field |
