Ithaca vs. Saint John Fisher

The Game Story:
ITHACA, N.Y. – The 12th-ranked men’s lacrosse team advanced to the Empire 8 Championship Tournament final with a 13-6 win over St. John Fisher. Ithaca, the tournament’s top seed, will host second-seeded Rochester Institute of Technology at 1 p.m. in Sunday’s final with the winner earning the leagues’ automatic bid to the NCAA playoffs.

Sophomore Matt Nelligan (Pingree School/Rowley, Mass.) and senior Brandon Geluso (Harborfields/Greenlawn) led the Ithaca offense with three goals each. Senior Doug Lumb (Auburn/Auburn) and sophomore Mike Nowak (Ballston Spa/Ballston Spa) added two goals. Senior Matt Pugliese (Williamsville East/Williamsville) and freshmen Mike Cintineo (Honeoye Falls-Lima/Honeoye Falls) and Alec Siefert (Duxbury/Duxbury, Mass.) tallied one goal. Lumb, Cintineo and junior Kyle Golden (Ossining/Briarcliff Manor) each recorded two assists.

Junior Dennis Butler (Pleasantville/Pleasantville) made eight saves.

After St. John Fisher scored the opening goal of the contest, the Bombers (11-3) responded by scoring the next five goals. The Cardinals (9-7) would answer with two goals before Ithaca scored the final goal of the half and would enter halftime with a 6-3 lead. Ithaca scored the first two goals of the third quarter to stretch its lead to 8-3. St. John Fisher would close the gap to two before the Bombers scored the final five goals of the afternoon.

Sixth-ranked RIT defeated three-time defending Empire 8 champion Nazareth 18-13 to advance to Sunday’s final. The Bombers will be searching for the first league crown since 2002 while the Tigers will try to secure their first ever title. Ithaca defeated RIT 11-10 on April 12 and has not lost to the Tigers since 2000.
