|The Game Story:|
|The Keuka College menís lacrosse team didnít have the start to its 2008-09 season that they wanted as they were knocked off by Vassar College, 9-7, on the road Saturday.|
Vassar used a strong first period to distance themselves from the Storm and improve its record to 1-1 on the year. Keuka now sits at 0-1 on the season.
Despite out-shooting Vassar 38-32 for the game, the Storm were unable to get out from the three-goal hole they were in after the first period. Vassar pumped in five goals in the opening period including two with just three minutes remaining in the period. Keuka managed just two goals in the first.
After Vassar scored another goal to open the second, Keuka answered with two goals of its own to get within two (6-4). That would be all of the scoring in the second period. Keukaís defense really stepped up in the third period as the Storm held Vassar scoreless despite allowing ten shots. Keuka sophomore goalie Brett Leonard (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill) stopped six shots in the third period while senior attacker Drew Kunda (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill) scored the periodís lone goal.
Trailing 6-5 entering the final period, Keuka was able to out-shoot Vassar 10-7, but it didnít matter as Vassar was a little more accurate with its shots. Out-scoring Keuka 3-2 in the fourth period. Vassar really dominated the ground balls, picking up 14 more (46-32) while also winning two more face-offs (10-8). Both teams cleared the ball all but four times.
Senior attacker Adam Farrell (Hamburg, N.Y./Frontier) led the Storm with four goals including both of Keukaís fourth-period goals. Kunda added two goals and an assist on the day.
Scoring his first career collegiate goal was rookie Matt Kise (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill). Senior TJ Radka (Waterloo, N.Y./Cayuga CC) and freshman Tim Mandell (Corning, N.Y./Corning East) each dished off an assist.
Leonard had a huge game in goal for the Storm stopping 15 shots in just his second career start. Nine of Leonardís saves came in the second half. Vassarís goalies Alex Tice (9) and Ed Pappo (7) combined for 16 saves on the day.
The Storm will next take on SUNY Geneseo at Hobart Collegeís McCooey Field this Friday, March 13 beginning at 6:30 pm.
