| The Game Story: | |||||
| t was a game of streaks and runs as Keuka College’s men’s lacrosse team hosted rival Morrisville State Saturday afternoon in the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) opener for both schools. In a rematch of last year’s NEAC title game, which the Storm won 8-7, the Mustangs led 2-0 before Keuka scored the next two goals to knot the score. Tied at three heading into the third quarter, the Storm took a 5-3 lead before Morrisville answered with four straight goals, and while Keuka trailed only 9-8 on senior Gino Marcello’s (Rochester, NY/Churchville-Chili) man-up goal midway through the fourth quarter, the Mustangs scored the final three goals to prevail 12-8. Marcello finished with three goals, freshman Anthony Luppino (Penn Yan, NY/Penn Yan) added three goals and two assists while junior Mike Crumlish (Hilton, NY/Hilton) and freshman James Voigt (Penn Yan, NY/Penn Yan) each added goals for the Storm (2-4, 0-1 NEAC). Devin Maxwell scored a game-high five goals while Jack Martocello and Jeremy Beresovoy added two goals apiece for the Mustangs (4-3, 1-0 NEAC). Sophomore Zachary Koczent (Geneva, NY/Geneva) won 12 of 17 faceoffs for Keuka while freshman Eric Saltrelli (Webster, NY/Webster Schroeder) stopped 10 shots for Keuka, which outshot Morrisville 33-28. Morrisville’s stingy defense held the Storm scoreless in the first quarter, and the Mustangs led 2-0 after one. Keuka answered back with three straight goals in the second while holding Morrisville scoreless. Luppino scored his first goal of the contest, a man-up goal off a feed from Crumlish just 1:43 into the second, and Voigt knotted the score at 2-all off a helper from sophomore Kenny Cannon (East Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse-Minoa) halfway through the quarter. Morrisville’s Jeremy Beresovoy put the Mustangs back on top 3-2 before Luppino tied it on an unassisted tally 46 seconds before halftime. Marcello and Crumlish scored to put Keuka up 5-3, and the Storm defense clamped down and held the Mustangs scoreless for the first 11:33 of the third. Then the Mustangs got on track, scoring six straight goals over a span of 6:38 bridging the third and fourth quarters to take a 9-5 lead. Marcello scored twice in man-up situations and Luppino added an even-strength goal as Keuka pulled within 9-8, but Maxwell scored twice and Beresovoy finished off the scoring with 65 seconds remaining. Keuka returns to action with a 1 p.m. road game against SUNY Cobleskill on April 7.
