|WILKES-BARRE -- Visiting Eastern University scored four first quarter goals, then put the game away with five goals in the fourth period as the Eagles posted a 12-7 victory over host King's College Wednesday night at McCarthy Stadium.|
With the win Eastern improved to 8-4 and 2-0 in Freedom Conference while King's slipped to 5-6, 1-1 in league competition.
Eastern raced out to a 4-0 lead before the Monarchs got on the boar at with 8:27 on the clock on an unassisted goal by Lenny Fox.
The Eagles then scored twice to forge a 6-1 lead in the second quarter before the Monarchs scored twice in the span of seven seconds .A.J. Bungert scored at the 5:20 mark before Fox scooped up the faceoff and raced to goal to score again at 5:13 to trim the Eastern lead to 6-3.
The Eagles, though, scored the final goal of the half with 2:31 on the clock to take a 7-3 lead at the break.
The Monarchs enjoyed a big third quarter with three unanswered goals. Jason Merola struck net unassisted at 9:42 to start the surge. Kieran McMahon then scored off a Bungert assist with 0:54 left in the quarter to cut the score to 7-5. McCullough would score with just 0:07 left in the third quarter to bring the Monarchs to within 7-6.
In the fourth quarter, however, Eastern responded four straight goals to push the Eagle lead to 11-6 with 3:46 left in the contest.
King's looked to counter when Mike O'Brien scored off a Kevin Sweeney assist to cut the score to 11-7 with 3:09 on the clock. But Eastern shut the door with the game's final goal with 1:35 remaining to earn the victory.
Fox led King's with two goals while Bungert added one goal and one assist. Brendan McCrudden posted 11 saves. Chris Farrar scored four goals for Eastern while Matt Wagner tallied three goals and three assists. Aaron Benz made nine saves in net for the Eagles.
Eastern outshot King's 30-26 while holding a 28-27 edge in ground balls.
The Monarchs travel to Center Valley Saturday to face DeSales at 1:00 p.m.
