Lycoming vs. Elmira

The Game Story:
WILLIAMSPORT, Pa.—Lycoming’s men’s lacrosse team (2-3) defeated Elmira College (1-3) by a score of 14-8 on Tuesday afternoon at Shangraw Athletic Complex. It was the second-straight home victory for the Warriors.

Lycoming’s Dan Cannon (Orangeville, Ont.) led all scorers with four goals, while senior Warrior Jim Cusick (Garnet Valley, Pa.) netted three goals and added two assists. Lyco goalie Kyle Gilfoy (Exton, Pa.) had an impressive 12 saves for the game. Face-off man Mike Doherty (Berlin, Md.) was dominant, winning 19 of 26 face-offs.

Lycoming jumped out to a 4-0 lead by 10:45 in the first period on quick goals by Andrew Stoner (Orangeville, Ont.), Cannon, Jeff DeLong (Hilton, N.Y.) and Ed Williams (Florham Park, N.J.). From that point, there was no looking back as Brad Schaeffer (Smithsburg, Md.) and Cusick scored before the opening quarter ended to make it 6-0.

Cusick scored again 18 seconds into the second period before Elmira’s Dan Frost found the net at 13:24. Soaring Eagles Mike Szpiech and Mike Bialick scored before halftime, but Lyco’s Shea Conway (Glenelg, Md.) also netted a goal to make the tally 8-3 at the break.

Nate WalterCannon notched the Warriors’ only third quarter goal at 12:35, as Elmira cut into Lycoming’s lead with four-straight scores by Frost, Ian Morgan-Janes, Szpiech and Bialick before the end of the third period.

With the Soaring Eagles within two, 9-7, Lycoming reeled off three consecutive goals by Cusick, Cannon and Ricky DeNenno (Landenburg, Pa.), the last coming with 10:01 remaining in the game to re-establish a comfortable differential.

Brandon Brennan scored for Elmira before DeNenno took his second-straight assist from Cusick to score at 3:23. Cannon then scored unassisted with 2:36 remaining to cap off the day's goals.

The Warriors host SUNY-Maritime on Saturday, March 15 at 3:30 p.m. at Shangraw Athletic Complex. The game will be preceded by the Lady Warriors taking on Buffalo State at 12:30 p.m.
