Castleton knocks off MMA 13-11

DiSalvo and Mondoux score three times each but it's not enough as the Mariners lose for the first time in 09'

Castine, Maine -- Senior attacker Ryan Bartlett (Brunswick, ME) scored 4 goals on the afternoon as the Castleton State Spartans knocked of the previously undefeated Maine Maritime Academy Mariners 13-11 in a North Atlantic Conference men’s lacrosse game played Saturday afternoon at Ritchie Field.

The Spartans (5-3, 4-0 NAC) got on the board first at the 10:49 mark of the first quarter when Ryan Bartlett (Brunswick, ME) scored an unassisted goal. The Spartans struck again two minutes later taking a 2-0 lead when Michael Martinez (Barrington, IL) tucked one home off a pass from Phil Barry (Randolph, VT). Just seconds later Craig MacDerment (Glenville, NY) scored an unassisted goal to give Castleton the 3-0 advantage. The Mariners got on the board at the 3:08 mark of the first quarter when Andrew DiSalvo (Glastonbury, CT) received a pass from Chris Keiley (Holliston, MA) and got it past the goalie to bring the score to 3-1.

The Spartans took a 4-1 lead at the 12:52 mark of the second quarter when Ryan Bartlett scored his second unassisted goal of the day. Castleton padded their lead to 5-1 when Derek Riley (Randolph, VT) put one in the bottom left corner of the goal off of a pass from Kevin McCarthy (Johnson, VT). MMA answered with a power play goal at the 10:16 mark of the second quarter when senior Garrett Lake (Farmington, ME) found Wade Mondoux (Berwick, ME) at the front of the net to bring the score to 5-2. The Spartans would score the next three goals of the quarter and pushed the lead to 8-2 going into the half.

The Mariners scored nine seconds into the third quarter when Andrew DiSalvo blasted a shot past the Castleton goalie to close the gap to 8-3. Brian Corain (Berwick, ME) assisted on the extra man advantage goal. Todd Murphy (Middlesex, VT) scored another man up goal for MMA at the 12:22 mark cutting the deficit in half at 8-4. The Mariners scored again bringing the score to 8-5 when Wade Mondoux found the back of the net off of an assist by Todd Murphy. Murphy scored just 30 seconds later from 20 yards out from Andrew DiSalvo bringing the score to 8-6. The Spartans answered at the 5:01 mark of the third quarter when Ryan Bartlett scored his third goal of the day giving Castleton the 9-6 advantage. The Mariners refused to give in scoring again at the three-minute mark when Chris Keiley picked up a ground ball in front of the Spartan net and shoveled it by the goalie to bring the score to 9-7. Castleton answered the call though and scored on their next possession when Jake Rick scored off of an assist by MacDerment. The Spartans pushed the lead by to four (11-7) when Derek Riley scored an unassisted goal off of the faceoff. The goal was Riley’s second of the day.

The Spartans opened the scoring in the fourth quarter when Bartlett tallied his fourth goal of the game from Kevin McCarthy upping their advantage to 12-7. The Bartlett goal proved to be the game winner for the Spartans. MMA moved closer at 12-8 when Mondoux scored from a DiSalvo assist at the 10:35 mark of the fourth quarter. MMA’s Brian Corain and Andrew DiSalvo scored the next two goals bringing the score to 12-10 but just a minute later Michael Martinez put the game away on an unassisted goal giving the Spartans the 13-10 lead. Garrett Lake would add another MMA goal with 5 seconds left from Nick Lund (Alfred, ME) but it wouldn’t be enough as the Spartans escape with a 13-11 victory.

MMA (4-1, 4-1 NAC) held a 46-29 shot advantage in the game but failed on 16 of the 27 face-offs, which proved to be costly. The Mariners also converted on 5 of 11 extra man opportunities in the game. DiSalvo continued to lead the MMA offense, scoring 3 goals and picking up 2 assist in the game. Wade Mondoux scored three times for MMA while Todd Murphy added 2 goals and an assist. Freshman goalie Daniel Redmond (Westbrook, ME) made 6 saves on 29 shots and picked up his first loss of the season.

For Castleton State, Bartlett scored four times while Craig MacDerment, Michael Martinez, and Derek Riley each scored two goals in the win. Kevin McCarthy added two assists in the win. Michael Mamunes (Manchester, CT) picked up the win for the Spartans making 16 saves on 46 MMA shots.
