| CASTINE, Maine -- The University of Southern Maine scored six unanswered goals in the fourth quarter to defeat Maine Maritime Academy, 11-5, in a non-conference men's lacrosse game Wednesday afternoon at Ritchie Field in Castine, Maine. The win snapped a four-game losing skid for the Huskies and lifts their overall record to 2-4. The Mariners fall back to 3-3. Junior Preston Gilbert (Saco, Maine/Cheverus) led the Southern Maine offense with two goals and three assists. Senior Matt Soule (Denmark, Maine/Fryeburg Academy), junior Lee Gauthier (Berwick, Maine/Noble), and sophomores Alex Pleau (Lewiston, Maine/St. Dominic) and Josh Reinhold (Tampa, Fla./South Kent) each scored two goals and had one assist. Junior goalie James Suriyodorn (Deer Park, N.Y.) finished with 10 saves. Freshmen Todd Murphy (Middlesex, Maine) and Wade Mondoux (Berwick, Maine) scored two goals apiece for the Mariners. Senior Garrett Lake (Farmington, Maine) had a goal and three assists. Senior Patrick Jones (Kennebunk, Maine) stopped eight shots. The Mariners tied the score at 5-5 with 13:48 to play on Murphy's second goal before the Huskies found the net six straight times. Gilbert got what proved to be the game-winning goal, off a feed from Soule, with 12:01 left. USM added three goals in a span of 1:13 to open a 9-5 lead. Soule and Reinhold scored 30 seconds apart, and Pleau tallied 43 seconds after Reinhold to give the visitors some breathing room. Gauthier and freshman Chris Gassman (Kennebunk, Maine) added two insurance goals later in the quarter. Neither team found the net in the opening quarter as Suriyodorn and Jones stopped four and two shots respectively. Reinhold's first goal of the game with 2:19 left in the second quarter provided the Huskies with a 3-2 advantage at halftime. The teams matched goals in the third quarter. Mondoux tied the game at 11:32, but Soule restored the Huskies lead 17 seconds later. Lake equalized at 10:31, and the game remained tied until 22 seconds were left when Gauthier scored off a feed from Gilbert. Southern Maine hits the road on Saturday (12:00 p.m.) traveling to Western Connecticut State University for a Little East Conference game. Maine Maritime will play at Castleton State College on Saturday (11:00 a.m.). |
