|The Game Story:|
|PURCHASE, N.Y. – The Manhattanville men’s lacrosse team jumped out to a 6-1 halftime lead and kept DeSales University at bay for the rest of the game, as the Valiants kept their postseason hopes alive with a 9-5 Middle Atlantic Conference victory over the Bulldogs under the lights of GoValiants.com Field on Thursday night.|
Seven different Valiants found the back of the net in the win, led by two goals each from sophomore Mike Strauss (Newark, Del) and freshman Charlie Ogalin (Trumbull, Conn.). Ogalin also added an assist for a team- and season-high three points.
For DeSales, senior Joshua Van Hart had a game-high three goals, while classmate Matthew Brancaccio scored twice and also assisted on a pair for a game-best four points.
The Valiants won Thursday’s game largely due to the play of junior netminder Andrew Predun (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y.), who made 10 huge saves on 15 shots on goal. The junior stood especially tall in the fourth quarter, stopping five shots and helping to thwart numerous other DeSales attacks. The shot totals for the game were nearly even, as DeSales took four more shots (33-29) but Manhattanville put 18 on goal compared to 15 for the visitors.
Strauss opened the scoring with the first goal of the game 5:35 into the first quarter. The Bulldogs came back to tie the game at one with 3:21 left in the quarter on a Brancaccio tally, but Valiant freshman Conor McAndrew (Lloyd Harbor, N.Y.) took the lead back only 25 seconds later to give the Valiants a 2-1 lead.
In the second quarter the Valiants opened the flood gates, scoring four consecutive goals in less than seven minutes. Ogalin led the scoring streak 2:08 into the quarter, and freshman Joe Daly (Mahopac, N.Y.) teamed with junior Andrew McMillin (Garden City, N.Y.) to score twice in 58 seconds to give the home team a 5-1 lead. Strauss’s second goal of the game completed the first half scoring at 6-1 just under three minutes later.
The Bulldogs tried to step up their game in the second half, but Manhattanville answered the Bulldogs’ first three tallies of the half with one of its own to keep the score out of reach. In the third quarter, junior Joey Hasbrouck (Wantagh, N.Y.) and senior Vinny Menzenski (Yorktown, N.Y.) scored less than 70 seconds after DeSales goals to keep the Valiant lead at five goals.
Ogalin’s second of the game, coming with 1:39 left in the fourth quarter off a pass from McMillin, sealed the win for the Valiants.
The Manhattanville penalty kill once again saved the team from a penalty-filled game, as the home team allowed only one goal in nine man-up opportunities totaling 7:30. The Valiants improved their successful kill rate to 88.6 percent on the season, tops in the Middle Atlantic Conference.
Manhattanville (4-7, 3-3 MAC) faces another must-win MAC contest its next time out, which comes at Misericordia University on Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. DeSales (3-8, 2-4 MAC) will face Widener University on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m.
