The Game Story:
February 24, 2007 - The men's lacrosse team won a wild one, defeating the Kings Monarch's 10-9 this afternoon. Freshman goalie Andrew Predun (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y.) came up huge stopping 23 shots while junior Luke Dorfman (Freeport, N.Y.) scored four goals to lead the Valiants over the Monarchs.

After winning only two games last year and not having an opening day game since 2002, the Manhattanville Valiants showed today that they are a new team. The Valiants came out hard and battled until the end to earn the 10-9 victory over the visiting Monarchs.

Sophomore Vin Menzenski (Yorktown, N.Y.) got the scoring started for the Valiants just over two minutes into the game scoring an unassisted goal to put the Valiants ahead 1-0. Manhattanville never trailed but the game was tied four times.

Kings would even the score at 1-1 less than 45 seconds later. Dorfman would then put the Valiants ahead 2-1 cutting hard past a defender and putting one past the Monarch goalie. Less than a minutes later Dorfman would strike again taking a pass from senior Ryan Kuhn (Copaigue, N.Y.) and giving Manhattanville the 3-1 lead. Freshman Joe Hasbrouck (Wantagh, N.Y.) tallied his first collegiate goal thanks to an assist from senior Nick DeRobertis (Somers, N.Y.) with 6:57 to play in the first quarter.

Manhattanville would be held scoreless the remainder of the quarter and Kings was able to get one past Predun to make the score 4-2 after one quarter.

In the second quarter Kings would strike first, cutting the Valiant lead to 4-3 with 14:10 to play. The Monarch's would then tie the game 4-4 before Manhattanville junior Mike Oswald (Floral Park, N.Y.) would take a pass from Dorfman and fire home a shot.

Dorfman would then tally his third goal of the game with 6:58 to go in the second quarter to make the score 6-4. The game would go back and forth with neither team able to score for the remainder of the quarter.

In the third quarter, Oswald took a pass from sophomore Max Garofalo (Yorktown, N.Y.) and netted his second of the game to put Manhattanville ahead 7-4. Kings would respond scoring three straight goals over the following two minutes to even the score at 7-7.

Menzenski was able to sneak one in with 3:48 to go in the quarter to put the Valiants back on top 8-7.

In the fourth quarter both teams came out wanting it. Kings was able to even the score at 8-8 with 14:14 remaining in the game. After a Kings player was penalized for three minutes for using an illegal stick, Manhattanville took advantage.

Sophomore Scott Montaldo (White Plains, N.Y.) was able to put the Valiants ahead for good 9-8 off an assist from Hasbrouck. Dorfman tallied his final goal of the game with 13:20 to play taking a pass from Kuhn and firing a shot past the Kings goalie to go ahead 10-8.

The Monarchs would keep the game interesting striking with 4:04 to play to make the score 10-9. Manhattanville was able to keep control of the game and Predun came up with some huge saves to preserve the victory.

Despite being outshot 41-38, the Valiants held the advantage on ground balls 43-24 and won 13 of 23 face offs to lead them to victory.

With the win Manhattanville improves to 1-0 overall and will next be in action on March 7 when they open up Skyline Conference play hosting the Stevens Ducks at 3:30 p.m.
