|The Game Story:|
|PURCHASE, NY (March 8, 2010) – Manhattanville freshman attack Joey Bacarella scored his third goal of the game 1:25 into overtime, leading the host Valiants to a 10-9 victory over the Vassar College men’s lacrosse team Monday evening in non-conference action.|
The Brewers fall to 1-1 on the season and will now embark on a three-game Spring Break trip with a Myrtle Beach, S.C contest against Medaille College on March 11 at 1:00 p.m. The Valiants improve to 1-1 following their second overtime game of the season and will next travel to Merchant Marine Academy for a 7:00 p.m. game on March 11.
Bacarella scored two of Manhattanville’s final two goals. His goal with 4:52 to play put the Valiants ahead 9-8, but Vassar senior attack Sean Murray scored his second goal of the contest with 2:14 remaining to force overtime at 9-9.
An extra period looked anything but inevitable in a game that was tied only three times – at 7-7, 8-8 and 9-9 – and had numerous momentum swings. Early on, it looked as though the Brewers will avenge last year’s 4-3 loss to Manhattanville by jumping out to a quick 3-0 lead partially into the second period after getting goals from freshman attack Matthew Pearce, Murray and junior midfielder Nick Cardillo. The second period ended with Vassar leading 3-2, and then the hosts went on an offensive rumble.
Overall, Manhattanville proceeded to score seven of the game’s next eight goals for an 7-4 lead, getting goals from five different players, including two each from Bacarella and junior attack Mike Strauss and headed into the fourth period with that three goal margin.
The Brewers were able to knot the game at 7-7 and take a slim one goal lead at 8-7 following back-to-back goals from sophomore attack Jack Gross coming within 18 second of one another, at the 13:52 and 13:36 mark and fellow sophomore attack Jeff Lee, who scored Vassar’s seventh and eighth goals of the game at the 12:54 and 8:50 juncture of the final stanza.
Manhattanville answered with two straight goals from senior midfielder Andrew McMillin and Bacarella for a 9-8 lead at the 4:52 mark. Vassar’s Murray knotted the contest at 9-9 and forced overtime at 2:14.
Gross notched his second career hat trick, coming off his three goal effort in the 2009 season finale against Cazenovia. Murray and Lee each had a pair of goals. Defensively, junior #Zach Beauchamp led all players with 14 groundballs, a category Vassar led 50-41 over the Valiants. Junior goalie Alex Tice, who was named the Liberty League Defensive Player of the Week on Monday, had 13 saves for the Brewers.
Bacarella and McMillin were the offensive stalwarts, collecting four and two goals respectively for a Manhattanville team that outshot Vassar 33-28, the all important last shot coming in the overtime period. Valiants senior goalie Andrew Predun had 12 saves.
