Manhattanville vs. Elizabethtown

The Game Story:
PURCHASE, N.Y. --- Keith Staulters scored a man-down goal with 1:30 remaining to break an 8-8 tie and give Elizabethtown College a 9-8 victory at Manhattanville College in a Middle Atlantic Conference men's lacrosse game Saturday afternoon.

Shawn Corcoran scored a career-high five goals for the Blue Jays (9-2 overall, 7-0 MAC), who outshot the Valiants (4-8 overall, 3-4 MAC) by a 50-18 margin but had to overcome four one-goal deficits and 24 saves by Manhattanville goalkeeper Andrew Predun. Joey Bacarella led Manhattanville with three goals, while Mike Strauss scored twice and Matt Corey added a goal and two assists.

Elizabethtown took an 8-7 lead with 2:43 to go on a goal by Jon Day, but the Blue Jays were subsequently assessed a three-minute penalty due to an illegal stick. The Valiants needed just 34 seconds to knot the game on Strauss' second goal of the game, but the Blue Jays won the ensuing draw and Aaron Weber fed Staulters for the go-ahead tally.

Manhattanville had two possessions in the final 90 seconds to try and tie the game, but turned the ball over both times and the Blue Jays were able to run out the clock and remain as the lone unbeaten team in the MAC.

The Valiants took a 1-0 lead 3 1/2 minutes into the first half on a goal by Joe Daly, but Cory Boushell and Corcoran scored 44 seconds apart to give the Blue Jays a 2-1 lead with 6:33 left in the quarter. Bacarella and Strauss responded with goals in the final two minutes of the period to give Manhattanville a 3-2 lead after one quarter.

Corcoran scored twice in the second quarter surrounding a goal by Bacarella as the teams went to halftime tied 4-4. Corey gave Manhattanville its last lead of the day at 5-4 with 12:41 left in the third quarter, before Corcoran and Staulters scored to put Elizabethtown on top 6-5. Bacarella's goal with 3:20 left in the third quarter knotted the contest at 6-6 headed to the final frame.

Just 38 seconds into the fourth quarter, Corcoran scored his fifth of the day to give the Blue Jays a 7-6 lead, and Elizabethtown carried the lead until Andrew McMillin scored the equalizer with 3:25 left.

In addition to its lopsided margin in shots, Elizabethtown controlled 56 ground balls to 24 by Manhattanville. Brent Campbell was dominant at the faceoff dot for the Blue Jays, winning 17-of-20 draws including all five in the fourth quarter.

Josh Dougherty led the Blue Jays with 11 ground balls while Campbell collected eight and Derk Karsten picked up seven ground balls. Mike Kenneally had a team-high three caused turnovers and picked up three ground balls.

Brendan Corcoran finished with five saves in goal for the Blue Jays, while Predun made 20 of his 24 stops in the first three quarters for the Valiants.
