UMW Men's Lacrosse Edges Dickinson, 9-8, in Double Overtime
FREDERICKSBURG, VA - Senior midfielder Lee Thompson scored unassisted with 1:29 remaining to give the University of Mary Washington men's lacrosse team a 9-8 win over visiting Dickinson College on Saturday at the Battleground. The Eagles even their record at 2-2, while Dickinson drops to 0-2.
Dickinson scored first on a goal by Ed Boyd, but Mary Washington led, 2-1, after one quarter, thanks to goals by juniors Greg Rose and Dave Morris, whose tally was assisted by Mark Fiore. Dickinson scored three straight goals in the second quarter to take a 4-2 lead, but the Eagles answered with four straight goals by Matt Morrell, Morris, Fiore, and Dave Justen, to hold a 6-4 halftime lead.
The Red Devils outscored the Eagles, 3-1, in the third quarter to knot the score at seven. The tying score was provided by Flynn Burch, who led DC with three goals. Dickinson took the 8-7 lead on a goal by Brian Read at 9:06 remaining in regulation but UMW's Dave Morris tied the score with just ten seconds remaining to tie the score, setting up Thompson's heroics. Both goalkeepers were outstanding through the overtimes, as UMW's Eric Everitt came off the bench to make four overtime saves, and Dickinson's Kevin Riley had two stops in the extra periods.
Everitt had six saves and Brad Buck had four saves for the Eagles, who will host York College of PA at 3:30 pm on Wednesday afternoon
