|The University of Mary Washington men's lacrosse team scored the final four goals of the game, and a solid defensive effort lifted the Eagles to a 7-5 victory over Goucher College on Tuesday at the Battleground. Sean Brown and Charlie White each scored two goals for the Eagles, now 4-3 on the season.|
Mary Washingotn opened the scoring with a goal by White on a Kohl Meyer assist with 11:14 remaining in the first quarter. Goucher knotted the score at one with 20 seconds remaining in the quarter on a Casey Hughes goal. The Eagles regained the lead on Brown's first tally, with 7:17 left in the half. Once again, Goucher scored in the waning seconds to tie the score, as Hughes netted his second goal of the day with 10 seconds left.
Goucher scored the first two goals of the second half to take a 4-2 lead, but Brent Fisk scored to cut the deficit to 4-3 with 1:51 left in the third. After Goucher returned the lead to two at 5-3 with 13:48 left in the game, White scored his second goal with 12:10 remaining, and Brown scored again to tie the score at five with 11:12 to go. Attacker Brian Meaney scored what proved to be the game winner on an assist from Dan Coats with 8:55 left, and Coats added an insurance goal on a pass from Meaney with 3:58 left.
Freshman Ryan Kleman had 11 saves while allowing just five goals in the Eagle nets, while Goucher's Austin Main stopped 11 shots for the Gophers. UMW outshot Goucher, 29-27, and held a 31-29 edge in ground balls.
The Eagles will return to action on March 26 when they visit St. Mary's College in a Capital Athletic Conference contest starting at 3:30 p.m.
