|FREDERICKSBURG, VA - The University of Mary Washington men's lacrosse team erupted for four third quarter goals to break a halftime tie to defeat St. Mary's College, 8-5, on Wednesday at the Battleground. The Eagles improve to 3-6 overall and 2-3 in CAC action, while St. Mary's falls to 6-3 and 2-2.|
St. Mary's scored the game's first two goals, leading 1-0 after one quarter. UMW's Keith Sweeney got the Eagles on the board with 11:16 left in the second quarter, and Brent Fisk knotted the score with 1:42 remaining before halftime.
The Eagles opened the third quarter by scoring three times in the first 4:06 of the period. Scott Fletcher scored the first of his two goals just 17 seconds in the quarter, and Fisk followed with his second tally at 12:13 left. Pete Collins scored at 10:54 to give UMW a 5-2 lead. After St. Mary's scored on a goal by Ryan Alexander, Fletcher scored again before the quarter clsed with SMC's Alexander netting a man up goal.
Sean Brown and Brian Meaney scored fourth quarter goals as insurance in the three goal win. UMW's defense was cited for its stellar play. Junior Eric Everitt made nine saves in nets for UMW, while Rich Barr had eight saves in the loss for St. Mary's.
The Eagles held a 28-27 advantage in shots, but controlled 13 of 17 faceoffs in the game. The Eagles will visit Christopher Newport University on Saturday at 1 pm.
