|Senior attacker Sean Brown scored five goals, and senior midfielder Brent Fisk added three goals to pace the University of Mary Washington men's lacrosse team to a 16-8 win over Virginia Wesleyan College in the 2009 season opener on Saturday at the Battleground. Senior middie Charlie White added two goals and four assists for the Eagles.|
UMW jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, with goals from Fisk, White, and junior Brian Deal. The Marlins cut the deficit to 3-2, but the Eagles scored the next seven goals, including three from Brown, to take a 10-3 advantage to halftime.
Virginia Wesleyan scored the first three goals of the second half to cut the deficit to 10-5, and UMW responded with a pair of scores, from Brown and Kohl Meyer, toput the margin at 12-5. Both teams traded goals throughout the remainder of the contest, giving UMW an eight-goal win.
Sophomore goalkeeper Ryan Kleman made 12 saves for the Eagles, including a one-on-one that propelled the Eagles into a transition goal in the fourth quarter.
Mary Washington will next be in action on February 21 at Hampden-Sydney College at 1:00 p.m.
