Mary Washington vs. Virginia Wesleyan

The Game Story:
Senior attacker Sean Brown scored five goals, and senior midfielder Brent Fisk added three goals to pace the University of Mary Washington men's lacrosse team to a 16-8 win over Virginia Wesleyan College in the 2009 season opener on Saturday at the Battleground. Senior middie Charlie White added two goals and four assists for the Eagles.

UMW jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, with goals from Fisk, White, and junior Brian Deal. The Marlins cut the deficit to 3-2, but the Eagles scored the next seven goals, including three from Brown, to take a 10-3 advantage to halftime.

Virginia Wesleyan scored the first three goals of the second half to cut the deficit to 10-5, and UMW responded with a pair of scores, from Brown and Kohl Meyer, toput the margin at 12-5. Both teams traded goals throughout the remainder of the contest, giving UMW an eight-goal win.

Sophomore goalkeeper Ryan Kleman made 12 saves for the Eagles, including a one-on-one that propelled the Eagles into a transition goal in the fourth quarter.

Mary Washington will next be in action on February 21 at Hampden-Sydney College at 1:00 p.m.
