| HERNDON, Va. --- Marymount slipped past Elizabethtown in a 5-4 defensive struggle, as the Blue Jays fell on the road in their first game of the 2003 season.
Marymount got off to a 2-0 lead in the opening eight minutes of the game, and the Saints' carried a 2-1 lead into the end of the first quarter following an Etown goal by Allen Churchman (Aston, PA/Garnet Valley) off an assist from Bryan Miller (West Chester, PA/Henderson) with 5:25 remaining in the quarter. Marymount went up 3-1 on a goal at 5:12 remaining in the second quarter, but Etown struck back to tie the game by halftime. Churchman netted his second goal of the game at 3:28 remaining in the second quarter on an assist from Mike Dunn (Upper Darby, PA/Monsignor Bonner). Dunn knotted the game at 3-3 with a goal of his own on an assist from Miller just 59 seconds before halftime. Etown took the lead for the only time in the game with 10:48 remaining in the third quarter, as Justin Griffey (Aberdeen, MD/Aberdeen) scored on an assist from Brian Ginter (Newtown Square, PA/Marple Newtown). A goal by James Markey for Marymount tied the score at 9:00 remaining in the third period. Jason Mehrtens scored the game-winner for Marymount with 7:17 remaining in the fourth quarter. Both Etown goaltender Brian Burke (Upper Darby, PA/Haverford) and Marymount goalie Matt McConnell made 13 saves. Elizabethtown out-shot Marymount 30-19, and the Blue Jays scooped up 26 ground balls against just 18 for Marymount. Etown will return to action on the road Wednesday, March 12 against Misericordia in a 3:30 p.m. game. |
