Umass-dartmouth vs. Curry
March 14, 2007
The Game Story:
NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's men's lacrosse team scored five goals in the second quarter to break the game open, then held off a late Curry rally for an 11-6 non-conference victory over the Colonels in their home opener at Cressy Field Wednesday afternoon.

Three freshmen attackmen were among the leaders for the Corsairs. Matt Leary (Framingham, MA/Framingham HS) scored five goals, Andrew Lewis (Longmeadow, MA/Longmeadow HS) added three, and Andrew Foster (Danvers, MA/Danvers HS) had four assists. Lewis scored the Corsairs' first two goals, while Leary's goal with 4:58 left in the first half gave UMass Dartmouth the lead for good. Lewis, Leary and senior midfielder Mark Lapointe (Tyngsboro, MA/Tyngsboro HS) followed with goals to stake the Corsairs to a 6-2 halftime advantage. Lapointe finished with three goals and two assists.

Leary scored to open the third period, and Lapointe added a pair of goals to make it 9-2 before Curry rallied. The Colonels scored the final goal of the third quarter and scored three consecutive goals in the fourth quarter before Leary's fifth goal of the game with 2:57 left finished the scoring.

John Morin scored the first two goals for the Colonels. Chandler Metz and Alex Savioli each had a goal and an assist.

"It was a nice win," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Kevin Mahoney. "We played well, shutting down Curry for the first three quarters. Curry is an athletic team, and we did a good job against them. We have a lot of young players, and they stepped up and played well."

The Corsairs out shot the Colonels, 41-23. Senior goalkeeper Craig Britton (Ashland, MA/Ashland HS) made 10 saves for UMass Dartmouth, while Alex MacMillan was called upon to make 17 stops for Curry.

The Corsairs improved to 2-0 with the victory, while Curry fell to 0-1. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they visit Salve Regina next Tuesday afternoon.
