Umass-dartmouth vs. Umass-boston
April 3, 2007
The Game Story:
NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-Bobby Cusack (Braintree, MA) scored his third goal of the game with 2:44 remaining to give UMass Boston an 8-7 victory over the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's men's lacrosse team in a Little East Conference game at Cressy Field Tuesday afternoon.

Cusack cut in front of the net and deflected a shot from Robert Thayer (West Tisdale, MA) past UMass Dartmouth senior goalkeeper Craig Britton (Ashland, MA/Ashland HS) to put the Beacons ahead, 8-7, with 2:44. UMass Boston held off a late flurry by the Corsairs to preserve their victory.

Chris Hanafin and Thayer scored less than two minutes into the game to give UMass Boston a 2-0 lead, but the Corsairs came back, getting a pair of goals from freshman attackman Matt Leary (Framingham, MA/ Framingham HS) to tie the score at the end of the first quarter. Peter Kovach (Cohasset, MA) and Cusack scored early in the second quarter for the Beacons, but senior defenseman J.P. Desjardins (Rutland, VT/Rutland HS) scored unassisted in the final minute of the first half to cut the lead to 4-3.

Sophomore midfielder Zach Eagan (Mansfield, MA/Mansfield HS) scored twice and Leary scored once in the third quarter for UMass Dartmouth to tie the game at 6-6 after three quarters. Sophomore midfielder Matt Swirbalus (Weymouth, MA/Weymouth HS) scored unassisted for the Corsairs with 10:51 remaining, but Thayer tied it with his second goal of the game 24 seconds later.

"We made too many mistakes, and our intensity level wasn't where it needed to be for the first three quarters," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Kevin Mahoney. "We didn't play as well as we did against Keene State last Saturday. We have some things to straighten out before we play Nichols."

The Corsairs out shot UMB, 44-36. Britton made 12 saves for UMass Dartmouth, while Nick Eaton (Rowley, MA) made 15 for the Beacons.

The Corsairs fell to 3-4 and 0-2 in the Little East Conference with the defeat, while the UMass Boston improved to 3-1 and 1-0 in LEC play with the victory. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they host Nichols in a non-conference game Saturday, while UMass Boston will host Salve Regina Thursday afternoon.
