| NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-Visiting Massachusetts Maritime Academy scored the only goal of the fourth quarter and held off the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's men's lacrosse team, 10-9, in a non-conference match at Cressy Field Monday. MMA sophomore midfielder Jake Bickley (Wilbraham, MA/Minnechaug Regional HS) scored at 8:39 of the fourth quarter to break a 9-9 tie. The teams had battled back and forth for the first three quarters, with neither squad able to gain a decisive advantage. The Corsairs took an early 1-0 lead on a goal by sophomore attackman Josh Arsenault (Revere, MA/Malden Catholic HS), and led, 3-1 in the first quarter before the Bucs scored the next two goals to tie the game. Junior attackman Brian Burke (Del Mar, CA/San Dieguito Academy) scored three times for Mass Maritime in the second quarter. The Bucs built leads of 8-6 and 9-7 in the third quarter, but UMass Dartmouth got goals from Arsenault and sophomore midfielder Nick Campbell (Rutland, VT/Rutland HS) to tie the contest entering the fourth quarter. Arsenault finished with five goals and one assist for the Corsairs, while junior attackman Andrew Foster (Newbury, MA/Danvers HS) added two assists. Brian Burke scored six times for the Buccaneers. Mass Maritime outshot UMD, 34-33. Freshman goalkeeper Cameron Crown (Walpole, MA/Walpole HS) made 12 saves for the Corsairs, while junior James Hitchings (Dover, MA/Dover-Sherborn HS) made 10 for the Bucs. "We played well in a lot of areas, but we just didn't execute at the end, and we couldn't score when we needed to," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Kevin Mahoney. "We had a nice effort, but it was a disappointing loss." The Corsairs dropped to 2-4 with the defeat, while MMA improved to 2-1 with the victory. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they visit Keene State Saturday in their Little East Conference opener, while the Bucs will visit SUNY Maritime Thursday evening. |
