| NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-Freshman attackman Tim Walsh (Medford, MA/Malden Catholic HS) scored five goals and added one assist to lead the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's men's lacrosse team to a 14-10 victory over visiting MIT in the season opener for both teams at rain-swept Cressy Field Saturday afternoon. Walsh scored three goals within a span of three minutes in the third quarter as the Corsairs raced to an 11-6 lead entering the fourth quarter. Freshman midfielder John Kucharzyk opened the scoring for MIT with a goal 48 seconds into the game, but UMass Dartmouth countered with goals by junior midfielder Matt Swirbalus (Weymouth, MA/Weymouth HS), sophomore attackman Josh Arsenault (Revere, MA/Malden Catholic HS), Walsh and junior midfielder Steve Colella (Wakefield, MA/Wakefield HS) to take a 4-1 lead after the first period. Arsenault, Swirbalus and freshman midfielder Steve Espinola (Groton, MA/Groton Dunstable HS) each scored twice for the Corsairs, while sophomore attackman Andrew Foster (Newbury, MA/Danvers HS) and junior attackman Matt Leary (Framingham, MA/Framingham HS) each had three assists. Dan Piemont had five goals for the Engineers, John Kucharczyk had two goals and one assist, and Dylan Roden added a goal and two assists. UMass Dartmouth out shot MIT, 50-27. Junior goalkeeper Steve Chase (Boston, MA/Boston Latin HS) made 11 saves for the Corsairs, while Sam Jasinski made 14 stops for the Engineers. UMass Dartmouth improved to 1-0 with the victory, while MIT dropped to 0-0 with the defeat. The Corsairs will return to action when they host Mitchell next Wednesday afternoon, while the Engineers will host Salve Regina next Tuesday.
