Umass-dartmouth vs. Norwich

The Game Story:
NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's men's lacrosse team outscored visiting Norwich in the second half, 8-0, and pulled away for a 15-4 victory in their non-conference game at Cressy Field Thursday.

The Corsairs held a 7-4 halftime lead. Sophomore attackman Austin Ray (Sandwich, MA/Tabor Academy) gave UMD a four-goal lead when he converted a pass from junior attackman Josh Arsenault (Revere, MA/Malden Catholic HS) with 12:53 left in the third quarter. Arsenault followed with a goal at 10:26, and then sophomore midfielder Christian Roberto (Wakefield, MA/Malden Catholic HS), junior midfielder Bobby Smith (Wakefield, MA/Wakefield HS) and junior midfielder Stephen Espinola (Groton, MA/Groton Dunstable HS) scored to make it 12-4 at the end of the third quarter. Senior attackman Andrew Foster (Danvers, MA/Danvers HS) scored twice in the fourth quarter for the Corsairs.

UMass Dartmouth started off quickly, opening up a 6-1 lead after the first quarter. Foster scored twice for UMD, and Smith, Roberto and Ray also scored. The Cadets rallied in the second quarter, scoring three times. Senior attackman Justin Pearson (Therese, NY/Indian River HS) scored twice, with his second goal sending Norwich to the locker room at halftime trailing by only three goals at 7-4.

Foster finished with four goals and two assists to lead all scorers, while Arsenault had two goals and five assists. Pearson led the Cadets with two goals.

"We played our best lacrosse of the season in the first quarter," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Kevin Mahoney. "Norwich regrouped and played well in the second quarter, and we came back in the third and fourth quarter. Norwich is a good young team with a lot of talented players. It was a good win and a step in the right direction."

The Corsairs out shot the Cadets, 51-18. Sophomore goaltenders Cameron Crown (Walpole, MA/Walpole HS) made six saves for UMass Dartmouth, while junior Ryan Leroux (Potsdam, NY/Potsdam HS) and sophomore Nathan Proctor (Pleasanton, CA/Foothill HS) combined to make 12 stops for BC. The Corsairs converted two of six man-up opportunities, while the Cadets were one for seven.

UMD improved to 2-2 with the victory, while Norwich dropped to 1-1 with the defeat. The Corsairs will return to action when they visit Clark March 23rd. Norwich will visit Daniel Webster March 24th. .
