The Game Story:
NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA. - Visiting Roger Williams scored four consecutive goals within a span of three minutes and 11 seconds early in the fourth quarter and held off the University of Massachusetts Dartmouthís menís lacrosse team, 12-9, in the Corsairsí 2009 home opener at Cressy Field Wednesday afternoon.

Senior Sean Benner (Narberth, Pa.) gave the Hawks a 9-7 lead when he scored with 13:46 remaining in the fourth quarter. Sophomore Jim Tancredi (Bloomingburg, N.Y.) made it 10-7 just 26 seconds later, then senior Dave Hurley (Hanover, Mass.) scored a pair of goals a minute and 25 seconds apart as RWU built a 12-7 advantage with 10:35 remaining.

Senior attackman Matt Leary (Framingham, MA/Framingham HS) scored twice to bring the Corsairs within three goals, converting a pass from junior attackman Andrew Foster (Newbury, MA/Danvers HS) with 5:25 remaining, and again after a pass from sophomore midfielder Josh Arsenault (Revere, MA/ Malden Catholic HS) with 3:24 left. But RWU sophomore goalkeeper Tyler Roebuck (Montgomery, N.Y.) held UMD off for the rest of the way.

Arsenault and Foster each scored twice in a high-scoring first quarter, which ended with UMass Dartmouth ahead, 4-3. Sophomore Drew Smith (Blue Point, N.Y.) scored three times in the second quarter and the Hawks led, 7-5, at halftime. Senior midfielder Steve Colella (Wakefield, MA/Wakefield HS) and Arsenault scored in the third quarter for the Corsairs to cut the lead to 8-7 entering the fourth quarter.

Foster and Arsenault led the Corsairs with three goals apiece, and Foster had three assists while Arsenault added one. Leary had two goals and two assists. Hurley and Smith each scored three times for the Hawks.

UMass Dartmouth out shot Roger Williams, 30-27. Roebuck made 11 saves, while UMD freshman goalkeeper Cameron Crown (Walpole, MA/Walpole HS) made 12.

The Corsairs fell to 1-0 with the defeat, while the Hawks improved to 2-0 with the victory. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they host SUNY Maritime Saturday afternoon. RWU will travel to Norwich, Conn., to face Eastern Connecticut State on Saturday.
