NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA – Andrew Bascom (Franklin, MA/Franklin) scored deep in the fourth overtime to lift visiting Western Connecticut State University over the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, 13-12, in a Little East Conference men's lacrosse quarter-final playoff game at Cressy Field Tuesday evening. The victory upped the Colonials record to 9-8 and they will now travel to take on the number two-seeded Warriors of Eastern Connecticut State University on Friday. The Corsairs end their season at 10-5.
Junior midfielder Jordan MacPherson (Westwood, MA/Westwood) netted the equalizer for the home team with three seconds left in regulation when he scored an unassisted goal following an end-to-end run down the field.
MacPherson had a team-high three goals to lead UMass Dartmouth. Junior Adam Niden (Walpole, MA/Walpole) and freshman Nicklaus Prozinski (Ashland, MA/Ashland) each added a pair of goals with five other Corsairs chipping in a single marker. Niden also dished out a game-high three assists.
Ryan Foster (Ledyard, CT/Ledyard) scored a game-high four goals to pace Western Connecticut and teammate Nate Wilson (Norwich, CT/Norwich Free Academy) had a hat trick. Nick Foley (Walpole, MA/Walpole) and John Foristall (Danbury, CT/Danbury) each had two goals and two assists for the Colonials.
Junior defenseman Steve Tarpey (Shrewsbury, MA/Shrewsbury) had game-highs in caused turnovers (five) and ground balls (10) for UMass Dartmouth.
The Corsairs outshot the Colonials, 46-36 (32-23 on goal), and held a 56-53 edge in ground balls. UMD held a 19-11 edge in face offs.
Kevin Seery (East Lyme, CT/East Lyme) made 20 saves in goal for WCSU, including nine in the four overtime periods, as he evened his record at 6-6. Junior goalkeeper Nick Thayer (Chelmsford, MA/Chelmsford) finished with 10 stops for the Corsairs as he ended the year at 10-5.
"It was a tough one," said UMass Dartmouth Kevin Mahoney. "We came out of the chute a little bit too tight and we were forcing things. When we finally loosened up, we came back and played. We did a lot of good things. We had great contributions from our five seniors; they did a great job across the board. We had kids step up across the lineup today. We had freshmen, sophomores and juniors do a good job. We came back and took them to four overtimes. We did a great job and unfortunately, at the end, we played a good, quality opponent and didn't finish all our opportunities."
"In the end, it's one of the things we're going to have to live with until the next season starts," added Mahoney. "We did a good job. We had a nice record at 10-5. I wish we could have had a few more 'W's' and fewer losses, but we did pretty well. We're going to have pretty much the same returning team next year and I'm excited about the next season. Again, this was a great season. I enjoyed the team thoroughly from top to bottom. It was a great team; we did a lot of great things. I really enjoyed the season and it's unfortunate that it's over."
