|The Game Story:|
|BUZZARDS BAY, MA- Freshman midfielder Steve Espinola (Groton, MA/Groton-Dunstable HS) took a pass from freshman midfielder Josh Arsenault (Revere, MA/Revere HS) and scored the winning goal with 10:19 remaining as the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's men's lacrosse team defeated host Massachusetts Maritime, 5-4, in a non-conference game at Ellis Field Wednesday.|
Espinola's goal was the only score in the fourth quarter and capped the scoring in a game that saw five lead changes. Arsenault tied the score when he converted a pass from junior attackman Matt Leary (Framingham, MA/Framingham HS) with 49 seconds left in the third quarter. The Corsairs are off to their best start in nine years.
Sophomore attackman Andrew Foster (Newbury, MA/Danvers HS) opened the scoring, staking the Corsairs to a 1-0 lead just 16 seconds into the game. Matt Sullivan and Ed Klodarska scored to put the Buccaneers on top, 2-1, but Espinola's first goal of the game, with 5:10 left in the first quarter, tied the game.
Foster scored with 8:56 left in the third quarter to give UMass Dartmouth the lead, but a goal by Taylor Sears six seconds later tied the score. Sears scored again with 3:44 left in the third quarter, setting the stage for the Corsairs' final rally.
"We played great defense, and we came through at the end," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Kevin Mahoney. "Steve Espinola scored the game winning goal on a great pass from Josh Arsenault. Our shots aren't finding the net, but we're playing good defense and we found a way to win."
UMass Dartmouth out shot Mass Maritime, 41-24. Senior goalkeeper Steve Chase (Boston, MA/Boston Latin HS) made 10 saves for the Corsairs, while James Hitchings made 21 for the Bucs.
The Corsairs improved to 5-0 with the victory, while MMA dropped to 1-2 with the defeat. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they host Keene State in their Little East Conference opener Saturday.
