Messiah vs. Scranton

The Game Story:

SCRANTON, Pa.—Messiah College broke away from a 6-6 tie at halftime by scoring five goals in the third period en route to a 12-9 victory over The University of Scranton in Middle Atlantic Conference action Saturday afternoon at Fitzpatrick Field.

Sophomore attacker Jono Linebaugh (Oak Hill, Va.) scored four goals and assisted on two others and sophomore attacker Ryan White (Ft. Washington, Pa.) added four goals to pace the Falcons, now 5-3 overall and 3-1 in the MAC. Junior midfielder Rob Loderstedt (Mendham, N.J./Mendham) scored three goals and senior attacker Brian Lipski (Philadelphia, Pa./LaSalle) added a pair as the Royals had a three-game winning streak snapped and fell to 4-6 overall and 3-2 in conference play.

Down 8-6 early in the third period, the Royals fought back and tied the game on an unassisted goal by freshman long-stick Andrew Davis (Havertown, Pa./St. Joseph’s Prep) at the 9:48 mark and on a goal by Loderstedt that was assisted by senior Kyle Harbin (Wixom, Mich./Novi) with 7:59 remaining. Linebaugh gave the Falcons the lead for good with an unassisted goal a minute later and White scored back-to-back goals at the 6:46 and 3:57 marks as Messiah took an 11-8 lead entering the final period of play.

Scranton led 1-0 on the first of two first period goals by Lipski at the 13:52 mark, before White scored twice and Linebaugh once to give Messiah a 3-2 lead after the opening 15 minutes of play. The Royals trailed 4-2 early in the second period before Loderstedt sandwiched a pair of unassisted goals around an unassisted goal by Messiah’s Kevin Dennsteadt (Annapolis, Md.) to cut the Falcons’ lead to 5-4. Lee Vance (Lowville, N.Y.) extended Messiah’s lead to 6-4 with a goal off an assist by Reed Huranberg (Clifton, Va.) at the 3:47 mark before Scranton’s William Ayers (Croton on Hudson, N.Y./John F. Kennedy) and Matt Cesare (Branchburg, N.J/Immaculata) added a goal within 30 seconds of each other to tie it by intermission.

Scranton sophomore Jonathan Sutter (Media, Pa./Penncrest) and Linebaugh each scored a goal in the fourth period to close out the scoring. Junior goalkeeper Tom Kenyon (Chittenango, N.Y./Chittenango) made a game-high 12 saves for Scranton while Messiah’s Chris Gilbert (Scottsville, Va.) had 10. Senior Tim Miller (Glen Cove, N.Y./Chaminade) had two assists and sophomore Peter Doran (Glen Head, N.Y./North Shore) one for Scranton.

The Royals will host the Warriors of Lycoming College this Tuesday, April 8, beginning at 4:00 p.m. at Fitzpatrick Field.
