Middlebury vs. Bowdoin

The Game Story:
Middlebury went on a 5-0 run midway through the game on its way to a 10-7 win over Bowdoin in an NCAA second-round contest on campus. The Panthers advance to the quarterfinal round, where they will travel to Cortland State for a contest on Wednesday. Bowdoin ends its season with a 12-7 record, including 1-1 in NCAA Tournament play in the school’s first appearance. With the victory, the Panthers are now 27-8 in NCAA Tournament action since ’96.

Bowdoin came out strong, taking a 4-1 lead with 6:35 remaining in the first quarter. Adam Tracy scored the game’s first goal as he wrapped around the cage with a high shot. Matt Ferrer answered for Middlebury as he scored cutting to the goal after a nice feed from Pete Smith. Cullen Winkler scored off a pick rolling to his right with 1:36 left in the first quarter to give the Polar Bears a 2-1 lead.

Winkler struck again in the second, before Justin Starr hit a cutting Eric Thompson to make it a 4-1 game. Middlebury bounced back and scored the final three goals of the half, including a pair in 20 seconds, to tie the game at four heading into the intermission. Skyler Hopkins scored the first with a shot from the outside as he cut across the top of the zone. Smith picked up a ground ball and quickly scored with 41 seconds left for the Panthers, before Rory Sanborn scored a man-up goal with just 21 seconds remaining in the half.

The Panthers continued their five-goal run in the third quarter, as Tom Petty and Hopkins scored (man-up) to make it a 6-4 game with 9:23 on the clock. Bowdoin came right back with a pair of goals to tie the game at 6-6 late in the quarter. Harry Ashforth scored the first after he scooped up a ground ball, while Winkler tied the game in transition following a Middlebury turnover. Immediately following Winkler’s goal, Middlebury’s Dave Campbell won the face-off and carried the ball all the way in to regain the one-goal lead for the Panthers.

Jim Cabrera beat his man cutting to the goal and converted a nice pass by Smith at the 11:49 mark of the fourth quarter to give Middlebury an 8-6 advantage. Bowdoin’s Adam Tracy picked up a ground ball and quickly found the back of the net for Bowdoin with 7:47 remaining to make it a one-goal game. Just 10 seconds later, Campbell converted once again after winning a face-off and driving to the goal. Tom Petty converted a lengthy pass from Cabrera with 4:16 left to give the Panthers some breathing room at 10-7.

Campbell had a big day for the Panthers, scoring twice while winning 15 of 20 face-offs and a game-high dozen ground balls. Petty and Hopkins also had two goals apiece, while James Guay picked up eight ground balls. Pete Britt made 14 saves in goal to earn the win.

Winkler scored three to pace Bowdoin, while Tracy added a pair. Alex Gluck made three saves in the first half, while Gordon Convery had seven second half saves.
