The Game Story:

Middlebury moved to 26-7 all-time in NCAA tournament play as they cruised to a 21-2 win over Mount Ida in a first-round game played on Kohn Field. The Panthers advanced to take on NESCAC foe Wesleyan in a second-round game on Saturday, May 12th at 1:00 p.m.

Middlebury jumped on the board at the 11:56 mark as Mike Stone scored cutting to the goal. Jim Cabrera made it a 2-0 game with a similar goal with 10:38 left in the first quarter. The Middlebury defense was stellar early, causing several failed clears by Mt. Ida, as the Mustangs failed on seven of 10 clearing attempts in the first quarter.

Middlebury kept up the pressure with four goals in the final 4:43 of the first quarter to hold a 6-0 lead after one. Mount Ida scored the first goal of the second quarter as Vince Pizzimenti made a nice feed to Leo Shidler for the man-up goal at the 11:25 mark.

The Panthers scored the next three goals, including a pair by Skyler Hopkins to hold a 9-1 lead at the intermission.

Middlebury earned the game’s next 11 goals to take a commanding 20-1 lead late in the fourth quarter. Trevor Bergerson broke up the run at the 4:03 mark, before Will Simpson scored the game’s final goal with a nice over-the-shoulder shot with 3:13 remaining.

Middlebury dominated the face-off circle, winning 20 of 27 on the afternoon. Peter Mellen won 17 of 22, to go along with his 13 ground balls. The Panthers out shot the Mustangs 61-19, held a 65-29 ground balls advantage, while holding them to 15 of 20 clears.

Stone and Simpson led the balanced scoring attack with three goals each, while Cabrera, Hopkins, Nick Bastis, Tom Petty and Pete Smith each had a pair. Alex Palmisano made eight saves in 41 minutes of play, while Pete Britt made a save in 19 minutes of relief.

Shidler and Bergerson each scored for Mount Ida, while Matt Vernik made 18 saves in 55 minutes of action.
