| MIDDLEBURY, Vt. - The Middlebury College men's lacrosse team opened up its 2005 season with a 9-7 win over Springfield College on Kohn Field. The Panthers are ranked third in the latest Division III national poll. Springfield led 1-0 before the Panthers went on a four-goal run to take a 4-1 lead midway through the second quarter. The teams exchanged goals before Middlebury took a 5-2 lead into the halftime break. Jim Cabrera opened the second half scoring for Middlebury at the 4:46 mark, before Steve Krasco and Craig Gibson answered 37 seconds apart to make it a 6-4 game. Cabrera scored his second goal of the quarter with 1:38 left to increase the advantage to 7-4 after three quarters. Springfield opened the fourth quarter scoring, before goals from Cabrera and Dave Leach gave the Panthers a comfortable 9-5 lead with 3:46 remaining. The Pride hung tough and scored a pair of man-up goals in the game's last 1:09 to make it a 9-7 final. Cabrera led Middlebury with three goals on the afternoon, while Travis Meyer scored a pair and dished out three assists. Leach scored two and earned one assist in the win. Adam Cost and Shawn Cofrin each had a pair of goals to lead Springfield. Alex Palmisano made nine saves in goal to earn the win for the Panthers, while Kyle Cloutier made 13 saves for the Pride. |
