| MIDDLEBURY, Vt. - NESCAC Player of the Year Matt Dunn took a pass
from Zach Herbert in front of the cage with 3:06 remaining and beat Whittier
netminder Adam Messick with a shot just inside the post to give Middlebury a
13-12 victory in an NCAA Quarterfinal game on Sunday. The two-time defending
national champions advance to the semifinals where they will likely host
Ithaca next weekend, with times and dates to be announced.
In a game of scoring streaks the Panthers broke through first,
scoring the first three goals to take an early edge. Whittier rebounded to
score eight of the games' next nine goals to take an 8-4 lead late in the
first half. Dan Finck and Luke Gilbert scored two goals apiece in the run,
before Middlebury got one back from Matt Dunn shortly before the
intermission. The third quarter saw the Panthers creep back into the
contest, outscoring the Poets 4-2 to close the lead to 10-9 entering the
fourth. Middlebury scored the first two goals of the final period to regain
the lead at 11-10. Whittier tied the contest at 11 before the Panthers took
a 12-11 edge at 12:01. The Poets refused to go away, as Ryder Bateman scored
at 9:31 to knot the contest at 12, setting up Dunn's game-winner.
Eric Kreiger made four saves for the Panthers, while Adam Messick
made 13 saves for the Poets.
