|The Game Story:|
|CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Five unanswered goals in the third quarter, including three in a span of two minutes, helped lift the MIT men's lacrosse team to an 11-3 victory over Husson University in a non-conference game on Tuesday. Corey Garvey amassed a game-high seven points for the Engineers (2-1), as he finished with three goals and four assists. His four helpers resulted in four out of Dan Piemont's five goals. The Eagles saw their ledger dip to 0-4 following the inaugural meeting between both squads.|
Piemont opened the scoring with a solo effort after 1:29 elapsed and then tacked on another goal that was set up by Garvey. Tom Hay quickly gave MIT a 3-0 lead which was raised when Justin Myers registered the first goal of his career. Husson ended the shutout with 1:25 remaining courtesy of an unassisted goal from Mitch Heaps.
The majority of the second stanza was a defensive battle with both sides struggling to find its rhythm on offense. The Eagles' Ben Landry ended the stalemate by recording his team-leading seventh marker of the season which made the score, 4-2, in favor of the hosts. Husson then cut its deficit in half with 12 ticks left before halftime when Sam Smith found Nick Brown for a man-up goal.
The slight margin would hold until the Piemont-Garvey connection returned at the 10:34 mark of the third quarter. Garvey followed with a pair of unassisted tallies that increased MIT's cushion to 7-3. Neither squad found the back of the net until Piemont redirected a feed from Garvey with 44 seconds on the clock. Exactly 22 seconds later, Garvey completed the hat-trick as the Engineers ended the frame with a 9-3 lead.
Garvey found Piemont for the final time early in the fourth quarter as Myers capped the scoring with 2:26 remaining in regulation.
In addition to his game-high point total, Garvey added six groundballs. Myers won 11 of his 13 face-offs while scooping up six groundballs. Alex Andrzejewski gathered six groundballs as well, while Eric Zuk totaled four groundballs and three caused turnovers. In net, Christopher Rullan collected 11 saves and seven groundballs.
Matt Tabler, Landry, and Heaps each notched three groundballs while Tabler added a pair of caused turnovers. All three goalies saw action for the Eagles. Alex Behzad registered nine saves in 34 minutes of relief as John Hooper posted three saves in 14 minutes throughout the first, third, and fourth quarters. Tyler Quinn closed out the contest by stopping one shot during the last 11:41 of play.
Next up for MIT will be a road match at Whittier College on Tuesday, March 23. Husson returns to action on Saturday, March 20 when it hosts Rivier College in its home-opener.
