|SOUTHAMPTON UPENDS MSU, 11-6|
Upper Montclair, NJ (03/05/03) - NCAA Division II Southampton (NY) College spoiled the 2003 home opener for the Montclair State University men's lacrosse team today with an 11-6 victory at Sprague Field. The loss leaves MSU at 1-1 on the season.
The host Red Hawks led, 2-0, after one quarter of play, but the visiting Colonials scored six straight goals in an eight-minute span of the second stanza to break the game wide open. Southampton led, 6-3, at halftime and tacked on two more goals in the third quarter before scoring three times in the fourth session. Montclair pulled within a score of 6-4 and thenwithin 8-6, but could get no closer before Southampton scored three straight times to end the contest.
Sophomore attacker ANTHONY BARBERIO (Ridge, NY) led the Colonials with four goals and one assist, while freshman RYAN SMITH (Smithtown, NY) scored three times. Junior midfielders KEITH FLOOD (Port Jefferson, NY) and DAVE ORTIZ (Ridge, NY) each tallied two goals, while junior middie JAMIE FABIAN (Middle Island, NY) collected a goal and three assists. Junior goalkeeper JAY SELLECK (Ronkokoma, NY) made seven saves for Southampton.
Junior attackman SEAN PEKARSKY (Clifton, NJ) and freshman JOHN DELLA (Fair Pawn, NJ) paced the Red Hawk offense with two goals and an assist apiece, while sophomore KEVIN GONDRES (Fair Lawn, NJ) posted two assists. Pekarsky now leads MSU with four goals and four assists for eight points in two outings. Senior goalkeeper VINNY DeGENNARO (Fair Lawn, NJ) had 20 saves in all for the Red Hawks, who were outshot, 38-18. Freshman RICH DOYEN (Basking Ridge, NJ) and junior CHRIS MEIXNER (Hamburg, NJ) had Montclair's other goals. The Red Hawks managed only one goal in 12 man-advantage opportunities, while the Colonials went 1-for-4 with an extra man.
MSU is now slated to visit Villa Julie (MD) on Saturday, March 8, at 2:00 p.m.
