March 18, 2008
The Game Story:
Montclair, NJ (3/18/08) – Junior attackmen A.J. Bachman (Montville, NJ / Mountain Lakes) and Tyler Meixner (Hamburg, NJ / Vernon) combined for five goals and an assist as Montclair State posted its fourth straight victory with a 7-3 win over Babson College in NCAA Division III Men’s Lacrosse action at Sprague Field on Tuesday afternoon.

Sophomore Taylor Bonner (Old Bridge, NJ / Old Bridge) added a goal and two assists as the Red Hawks moved to 4-1 on the season. The win also evened the brief series between the teams at 2-2 as Montclair has taken the last two contests, including a 9-8 triple-overtime win at Sprague Field in 2004.

Jason Wellemeyer (Pembroke, MA / Catholic Memorial), Matt Harrington (Hanover, MA / Thayer Academy) and Matt Enright (Bristol, RI / Milton Academy) each had goals for Babson, which fell to 0-5 this season.

Bachman put the Red Hawks on the board 3:07 seven into the game as he took a pass from Bonner and uncorked a low shot while falling down for the game’s first score. Just over three minutes later Bachman added his second on an unassisted tally and then fed Patrick Nann (Livingston, NJ / Livingston) with 1:04 to play in the opening period as Montclair led 3-0 after one quarter.

Meixner would extend the lead to four goals midway through the second as he scored his first. Wellemeyer got the Beavers into the scoring column as he connected on a man-up tally as Babson cut the MSU lead to 4-1 at halftime.

Bachman posted the hat trick 2:11 into the third as he finished off a Bonner assist but Babson would trim the lead to 5-3. Enright scored unassisted with 2:17 to go in the third and Harrington’s goal from Bryan Wilbur (Hingham, MA / Phillips Exeter Academy) brought the Beavers within two with 12:11 left. However, Montclair’s Bryan Klimchak (Clark, NJ / Arthur L. Johnson) found a wide-open Meixner in front of the net to boost the lead back to 6-3 before Bonner finished off the MSU scoring with an unassisted goal with 3:25 remaining for the final margin.

Junior goalkeeper Thomas Bowers (Hamburg, NJ / Pope John XXIII) stopped 10 shots for Montclair State, which held a 36-31 edge in shots as well as winning eight of the 12 face-offs contested. Mario Passafiume (Boonton, NJ / Mountain Lakes) was 5-of-8 with three ground balls while senior Matt Sharp (Wilmington, DE / Salesaianum) recorded a team-best five ground balls. Bachman also added three ground balls and three caused turnovers while sophomore Pat Ferry (Clifton, NJ / Clifton) added four ground balls and three caused turnovers.

Mike Saucier (Nashua, NH) had 14 saves along with six ground balls for Babson, which received four ground balls from Wilbur and three caused turnovers by Harrington.
