Montclair State vs. Centenary

The Game Story:
Montclair, NJ (3/5/08) – Junior attack A.J. Bachman (Montville, NJ / Mountain Lakes) scored five times while classmate Tyler Meixner (Hamburg, NJ / Vernon) added a goal and five assists as Montclair State knocked off Centenary College, 13-4 in an NCAA Division III men’s lacrosse match at Sprague Field on Wednesday afternoon.

Senior attack Bryan Klimchak (Clark, NJ / Arthur L. Johnson) added two goals and two assists as the Red Hawks evened their record at 1-1. MSU fell at Hartwick, 9-6 on Sunday to open their 2008 campaign.

Sophomore Jason Reig (Long Valley, NJ / West Morris) had a goal and two assists for Centenary, which was playing its season opener.

The Red Hawks would jump out on top to a 2-0 lead in the first five minutes of the game as Meixner fed Mario Passafiume (Boonton, NJ / Mountain Lakes) at the 4:40 mark and then netted one of his own with 9:57 to play. Kurt Shann (Kenvil, NJ / Roxbury) and Ryan Mangold (Hillsborough, NJ / Hillsborough) answered with goals as Centenary tied the game with 11:11 left before halftime, but Montclair would close out the half with four straight goals, three by Bachman, as the Red Hawks took a 6-2 lead into the break.

In the second half, Nate Small (Great Mills, MD / Great Mills) scored for Centenary 57 seconds into the period, but Klimchak and Bachman each finished a Meixner feed and Passafiume registered his second tally as the Montclair advantage grew to 9-4 after three period. Bachman added his fifth goal with 11:33 to play in the game as the Red Hawks outscored the Cyclones, 4-0 in the final period. Mike Corsetto (Kinnelon, NJ / Kinnelon), Vic DeMaio (Vernon, NJ / Vernon) and Josh Wolfson (Randolph, NJ / Randolph) each collected a goal.

MSU goalkeeper Thomas Bowers (Hamburg, NJ / Pope John XXIII) made 12 saves for the Red Hawks while Centenary’s Brian Troilo (Whitehouse Station, NJ / Hunterdon Central) made 15 stops. Joe Swantkoski (Whitehouse Station, NJ / Hunterdon Central) had nine faceoff wins for the Cyclones (9-of-19) while Marc Guido (North Caldwell, NJ / West Essex) was 7-of-9 in face-offs for the Red Hawks.

Montclair State returns to action on Saturday, March 8 as the Red Hawks face Roger Williams University at 1:00 pm. The game will be played at John Jay High School in Cross River, NY. Centenary will also be in action with another road contest at Kean University at the same time.
