Montclair State vs. Drew
March 1, 2003
The Game Story:
Madison, NJ - For the second consecutive year, Montclair State handed Drew their first loss of the season as the Red Hawks clung to a 9-7 victory over Drew Saturday afternoon. Originally scheduled as an away game for the Rangers (0-1), it was switched late Friday to a home contest, as Montclair's field was unplayable due to snow still on their playing surface.

Montclair (1-0) got on the board first on back-to-back extra man goals by junior attacker Chris Meixner (Hamburg, NJ). Drew's Phil Rosenau (Ambler, PA) answered with two of his own nets, also taking advantage of extra-man situations to even the score. Montclair went on to take a 6-3 lead at halftime after getting goals from Clifton's Sean Pekarsky and Anthony Mosca, Rich Doyan (Basking Ridge, NJ), and a third goal from Meixner.

The Rangers' Eric Siegel (Culver City, CA) closed Drew's deficit with a connection at the start of the second half, before the Red Hawks netted two more increasing their lead to 8-4. Drew freshman Dan Moffo (West Hartford, CT) and sophomore Craig Middleton (S. Setauket, NY) each netted a goal to bring Drew within two again (8-6) before Pekarsky hit for one with 5:00 remaining (9-6). The Rangers had one more opportunity as another freshman, Quincy Booth (Philadelphia, PA) stepped up producing a goal with 1:40 left to play giving Drew momentum in the final minute, but could not come up with any more scores and take a loss in their season-opener.

Mike Litman (Ellicott City, MD) grabbed 13 saves for Drew before being relieved by freshman Matt Hornstein (Wynnewood, PA), who posted two saves on the afternoon. Montclair's Vinny DeGennaro (Fair Lawn, NJ) registered 11 saves in the Red Hawks' win.
