| Montclair, NJ (3/10/09) – Sophomore attack Tyler Meth (Basking Ridge, NJ / Ridge) scored five goals and added two assists while classmate Robert Sinicola (North Caldwell, NJ / West Essex) collected four goals and two assists as Montclair State jumped out to an eight-goal lead after the first quarter and cruised to a 24-5 win over Neumann College in NCAA men’s lacrosse action at Sprague Field on Tuesday evening.|
Freshman Matthew Prongay ( Edison, NJ / Edison) added a goal and two assists as the Red Hawks put together their largest offensive output in nine years in picking up its second straight victory. MSU moved to 4-1 on the year with the most goals in a game since a 28-3 win against City College of New York in the 2000 campaign.
Junior attack Kyle Gardner ( Emmaus, PA / Perkiomen Prep) had a goal and assist for Neumann, which fell to 0-3 on the season.
Montclair scored the first eight goals of the game. The Red Hawks wasted little time getting on the board as junior Taylor Bonner ( Old Bridge, NJ / Old Bridge) scored on an unassisted tally 37 seconds into the contest. On the goal, Neumann was called for an illegal stick and the Red Hawks took advantage of the three-minute penalty with three man-up goals. Senior John Schiavone ( Montclair, NJ / Montclair) scored just six seconds after the flag for a 2-0 lead with 14:17 to play. Greg Fitzgerald ( Glen Ridge, NJ / Glen Ridge) and Meth then scored 41 second apart as the lead grew to 4-0 with just over 12 minutes remaining.
Bonner scored off a Sinicola assist with 11:24 left and Sinicola got one of his own with just under eight minutes left as Montclair led 6-0. Meth found the back of the net for a second time with 6:45 left and Schiavone’s second tally 14 seconds after that gave MSU its 8-0 advantage. Tom Hendrick ( Springfield, PA / Springfield) broke the Montclair run as he scooped in a shot with 2:30 to play in the opening period. Sinicola closed out the dominating first quarter by Montclair as the Red Hawks led 9-1.
Dean Combos (Lake Hopatcong, NJ / Jefferson) , Chris Bachman (Montville, NJ / Montville) and Matt Cecere (Montville, NJ / Montville) each had two goals for Montclair State, which got a goal and assist from defenseman Patrick Ferry (Clifton, NJ / Clifton). The Red Hawks also won an amazing 26-of-30 face attempts, including 8-of-9 by Mario Passafiume ( Boonton, NJ / Mountain Lakes), who also added five ground balls. Marc Guido ( North Caldwell, NJ / West Essex) was 6-for-6 in faceoffs with Combos going 5-of-5. Bonner registered seven ground balls for MSU.
Junior Andrew Rosado ( Elmwood Park, NJ / St. Joseph’s) made three saves for Montclair while freshman Mark Glander ( Vernon, NJ / Vernon Township) stopped four shots in 24 minutes of action.
Junior Jake Boulay (Cape St. Claire, MD / Broadneck) made 16 saves for Neumann.
Montclair State is now off until Monday, March 16 when the Red Hawks travel to Middletown, Connecticut to face Wesleyan University at 7:00 pm. Neumann is back in action on Saturday, March 14 as the Knights return home to face New England College at 1:00 pm.
