|The Game Story:|
|Montclair, NJ (2/28/06) – Sophomore Midfield Mike Evans (Holtsville, NY/Sachem East) scored all three of his goals during a game-ending 8-0 run as Oneonta Stat overcame a three-goal halftime deficit for an 11-7 win over Montclair State in an NCAA Division III men’s lacrosse season-opening game for both teams at Sprague Field on Wednesday afternoon.|
Sophomore goalkeeper Nick Murray (West Babylon, NY/West Babylon) made 13 of his 17 saves in the second half as the Red Dragons (1-0) defeated MSU for the third time in as many meetings.
Sophomore attack A.J. Bachman (Montville, NJ/Mountain Lakes) had three goals for Montclair State, which dropped its season opener for the third consecutive year.
Montclair State scored the final five goals of the first half to take a 6-3 lead and extended it to four-goals eight minutes into the third quarter as Bachman scored on the man-up advantage with 6:24 to play. That would be the last goal for Montclair as Oneonta quickly trimmed the lead to 7-5 in the next minute as Scott Weiner (Suffern, NY/Suffern) and Evans scored within 20 seconds to spark the run. Tim Burns (Syracuse, NY/Nottingham) pulled the Red Dragons within a goal and Mike Schanz (Endwell, NY/Maine Endwell) tied the game with 1:24 left in the period on a power-play marker. Evans put Oneonta ahead to stay 35 seconds later as the visitors took a 8-7 advantage after three periods.
Evans would collect the hat trick 33 seconds into the fourth to push the lead to 9-7. Weiner added his second with 4:19 to go and Tyler Dunne (Cazenovia, NY/Cazenovia) capped off the run with 17 seconds to play as he scored short-handed.
Meanwhile Murray kept Montclair State off the scoreboard as he stopped all 10 Montclair State shots on goal in the final 15 minutes. Murray’s counterpart Thomas Bowers (Hamburg, NJ/Pope John XXIII) made 11 saves in the game for MSU.
Weiner finished with two goals and three assists while Neal Campbell (Merrick, NY/Mepham) had a goal and two assists. Dunne registered five ground balls and seven faceoff wins for Oneonta, which was outshot in the game, 40-28.
Evan Wehmeyer (Succasunna, NJ/Pope John XXIII) had two goals and an assist for the Red Hawks, who were just 2-of-10 in extra-man opportunities. Sophomore John Schiavone (Montclair, NJ/Montclair) had six faceoff wins and four ground balls while senior Allister Edwards (Montclair, NJ/Montclair) notched four caused turnovers.
