| SCHIAVONE’S GOAL IN OT LIFTS MSU PAST RICHARD STOCKTON, 13-12|
Montclair, NJ (3/24/07) – Sophomore midfielder John Schiavone (Montclair, NJ/Montclair) scored with 43 seconds remaining in overtime as Montclair State, which trailed throughout most of the contest, posted a 13-12 victory over Richard Stockton in Skyline Conference men’s lacrosse action at Sprague Field on Saturday afternoon.
Junior Bryan Klimchak (Clark, NJ/AL Johnson) had five goals as the Red Hawks snapped a two-game losing streak and improved to 2-3 on the year with their first conference victory (1-2). Montclair also upped their mark in the all-time series to 16-8 against the Ospreys, winning for the seventh time in the last eight meetings between the schools.
Sophomore attack Keith Bologno (Glen Gardner, NJ/Voorhees) had three goals and two assists for Richard Stockton, which dropped its fourth straight and fell to 1-4 overall, 0-2 in the Skyline Conference.
Montclair had taken a 1-0 lead early in the first quarter, but Richard Stockton scored four straight goals to take a lead it would not relinquish until the game-winning tally. Three times the Red Hawks tied the game, including twice in the fourth quarter. Sophomore Mario Passafiume (Boonton, NJ/Mountain Lakes) deadlocked the game at 12-all with 1:11 left as he scored un assisted on a shot from the left side that found the upper far corner for the goal.
In the overtime, an illegal procedure penalty on the face off gave Richard Stockton the ball and the Ospreys had three chances to win the game. Steve Masurek (Jackson, NJ/Jackson) nearly ended the game two minutes in, however his shot right in front of the cage went wide. Montclair goalkeeper Thomas Bowers (Hambug, NJ/Pope John XXIII) then made two saves that kept the game tied before sophomore midfielder Matt Sharp (Wilmington, DE/Salesianum) scooped up a ground ball giving MSU possession with 1:44 to play.
Following a timeout, Montclair would turn the ball over, but senior John Della Pesca (Fair Lawn, NJ/Fair Lawn) intercepted a clearing pass behind the net giving the Red Hawks a second chance. Schiavone then made that count as he rifled a shot from 15 yards out that tucked just inside the upper left hand corner of the net with the game-winning goal.
Bowers finished with 16 saves for Montclair State, which was outshot in the game 43-39. Senior Ryota Ishikawa (Dayton, NJ/So. Brunswick) had 10 saves for the Ospreys.
