|The Game Story:|
|Montclair N.J. – Junior midfielder Brett Overend (Laguna Hills, Calif./Laguna Hills) and junior attack Eric Valero (Princeton Junction, N.J./West Windsor Plainsboro) each scored three goals to power 19th-ranked Rensselaer to a commanding 10-4 victory over Montclair State at Sprague Field on Saturday afternoon.|
RPI, 1-0 on the year, dominated MSU in the second half, exploding for eight unanswered goals. The Engineers, who trailed 4-2 at halftime, shut out the Red Hawks and outshot them 25-13 in the second stanza.
Montclair State, which remains winless in falling to 0-2, got off to a fast start behind junior midfielder Kenneth Bogert (Brick, N.J./Brick Township). Bogert had a hand in each of the Red Hawks' goals as MSU took a 3-1 lead after the first quarter.
Down 1-0, Bogert first set up freshman attack Michael Jevic (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern Regional) for the equalizer with 5:47 left before scoring an unassisted goal with just 12 seconds to play to give the Red Hawks the lead. Bogert, who won nine of 17 faceoffs in the game, then won the ensuing faceoff and quickly fed junior attack Jack Skeels (Roseland, N.J./West Essex) for another goal seven seconds later to close out the quarter.
The teams would trade goals in the second quarter. Senior midfielder Andrew Liptak (Westfield, Mass./Westfield) scored the first of his two goals for RPI at the 11:55 mark. Senior attack Matthew Prongay (Edison, N.J./Edison) then answered for Montclair State with an unassisted score as MSU went into halftime, ahead 4-2.
The Red Hawks lead didn't last long, RPI rallied back with three goals in a span of four and a half minutes in the third quarter. Overend, who opened the game's scoring in the first quarter, got his second goal of the game at the 13:35 mark, the first of four scores for the Engineers in the quarter.
Valero then tied the game a little more than two minutes later at 11:25 followed by an unassisted goal by junior midfielder Wes Rudy (Doylestown, Pa./The Hill School) with 9:06 remaining. Overend then earned the hat trick by closing out the quarter's scoring as RPI never looked back.
The Engineers continued the onslaught with four more goals in the final quarter. Senior attack Andrew Miller (New Hartford, N.Y./New Hartford) set up Valero twice before scoring himself on an assist from Overend.
Junior goalkeeper James Manchester (Niskayuna, N.Y./Niskayuna) has 13 saves for RPI while senior goalkeeper Mark Glander (Vernon, N.J./Vernon Township), stopped 12 shots for MSU.
